Waking up to the darkness of his room, Jake was confused. He usually woke up when the sun came through his window since it was summer break. He rolled on his side to check the clock on his nightstand. 6:30. Why was he awake so early?
That's when the smell of sausages and waffles hit his nose, along with the sound of clattering metal pans and pots from downstairs in the kitchen. His parents were making breakfast, of course! But why? Lately, all he and his sister had gotten to eat was stale toast at the most. This smelled and sounded like an absolute feast.
Jake hopped out of bed, rubbing his eyes as he descended the stairs. Their family was rather poor, his parents having been out of work for a while. Why would they be doing this today? What was so special?
In the kitchen, the smell grew overpowering, caused the little boy's thin stomach to growl audibly. Eggs, bacon, pancakes, waffles, oatmeal, orange juice, milk - it was the whole shabang! Rebecca was right behind him in gawking at the huge selection. Both were overwhelmed by the experience, they were so hungry all the time. Naturally, neither of them further thought about the reasons behind the breakfast and their parents' unnatural grins.
"Sit at the table, kids! It's just about ready!" their mother chirped cheerfully, and both did as they were ordered.
