“There, there… there’s no need to cry.” Dr. Strauss told you as she pulled the mirror away from your face while her other hand continued to rub your shoulder.
It was strange to hear both the doctor and your own body speak since they now sounded more like audio recordings instead of actual people. As you tried your best to wipe your tears away, Dr. Strauss looked over towards Katya in your body and said “That’s something that you’ll need to figure out on your own ‘Mr. Smith’. Since this experiment was a resounding success, I want to keep up the momentum and move on to another one of my experiments… I have a really good feeling that my timeline manipulator will be successful this time around.”
With her arm still wrapped around your shoulder, Dr. Strauss began to guide you back towards the waiting room where this all began. “Please see Theodore up front to receive your compensation or Violet if you’re willing to participate in another one of my experiments.”
You then stopped and asked “What!?! Aren’t you going to switch us back?”
Dr. Strauss stopped with you and briefly chuckled. “Mr. Smith… I mean Ms. LeGuin… there is no switching back per say.”
“What!?!” you shrieked as your hearing implants made your voice sounded even more computer-like than it already did. “What the hell do you mean? Can’t you just stick us back in your machine again?” you demanded.
Dr. Strauss looked at you before glancing over towards Katya in your body as if both of them knew something that you didn’t. She then chuckled again and said “Didn’t you read the fine print of the agreement before you signed it? Section 4, clause 5 clearly states that mind transferences were nonreversible and that any subsequent ones must wait 12 months before doing so again.”
Even Katya started laughing which made you felt like a complete idiot. It wasn’t because you didn’t read the fine print; it was because you didn’t read any of the print at all. You were awash at what to do now as it seemed that you wouldn’t ever get your body back now. Meanwhile, Katya in your body pranced by both you and the doctor in a flamboyant fashion as she headed through the curtains and back into the waiting area.
With just the two of you left, Dr. Strauss broke the awkward silence by saying “I’m sure she’ll make a good ‘Mr. Smith’ just like I’m sure you’ll make a great ‘Ms. LeGuin’. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have other experiments that need to be attended to.”
“But I didn’t even want this!” you stammered as you felt your eyes starting to water up again.
Unfortunately, Dr. Strauss didn’t seem to care and pushed you through the curtains and back into the waiting area. “Don’t forget to see Theodore or Violet before you leave.” she reminded you before finally disappearing.
You briefly stood there like a deer staring into a pair of headlights as you looked around the warehouse again. It all made complete sense now why everyone looked so damned different; most of these people were probably her other guinea pigs that were here to get stuff reversed or changed out.
“Ah… Ms. LeGuin… here’s your compensation that was agreed upon.” Another man’s voice told you as he broke you out of your trance. When you looked over, you saw it was the man in the expensive looking suit from earlier holding out an unmarked envelope for you. As soon as you took it with your feminine looking hand, he practically moved along as if you had never existed.
You briefly glanced at the envelope and wondered what you were going to do now. You’ve only been in Katya’s body for a few minutes and you already wanted to get out of it. In addition to feeling all sorts of strange feelings and sensations, there was also the oddness of having to hear absolutely everything as if it were an old song being played on a shoddy pair of headphones. It made you want to rip your new hearing devices off but if you did that, then you wouldn’t be able to hear anything at all.
As you thought about all of this, you glanced up to see Katya in your old body prance out of the warehouse as if she were a gay man who had just won the lottery. At first you wanted to stop her before she completely ruined your life when you realized that there honestly wasn’t much that she could ruin. Instead, you walked over towards an empty chair and took a seat. As you sat there in an unladylike manner, you wondered if this was honestly all for the best.
Your old life was already in the dumpster. You were a college dropout with few prospects and lots of student debt that you’d likely never be able to pay off, so Katya’s life couldn’t have been any worse. With the exception of Marcie and sometimes Derek, you really didn’t have many friends that would miss you or wondered why 'you' suddenly turned gay. Besides, the doctor said that you could always sign up for another experiment if you wanted to. Maybe she had something else that could improve your situation.
Katya might have now had your body and life but she was going to have one hell of a time getting anywhere without a car. Speaking of cars, you looked around the waiting area for Marcie since both of you came here together. You wanted to warn her so she didn't make the same mistake that you did but to your dismay, she was nowhere to be seen…
