Head down to the basement

If you were ever going to find this key, you had to start somewhere. Might as well go from the bottom up. You begin your descent into the basement. You expect there to only be one or two rooms to explore, so it would be an easy place to check off the list. Only when you get down there, you see that it is a long hallway with several doors and even branching halls.

It would be a waste of time at this point to backtrack upstairs just to find out it's down here anyway. You open up one of the doors and see a mostly empty room with only a bed. Based on the sheets, you can only assume what went down in here. You quickly check the pillowcase and under the bed, being the only two possible options to hide anything, but no luck.

You leave the room and go into the next one. Same deal as before, mostly empty save a bed, cum-stained sheets, no key. Same with the next two rooms. Was every room down here going to be like this?

What happened down here? Was there just some bitchin' orgy that you weren't told about? Or was this where those three you saw upstairs took their victims from the portraits? Either way, you were in a pickle.

There were a lot of rooms here. If you explored every room down here, even if they were all like this, you would eat up all of your time. Then again, what if it was their plan to hide the key in pure monotony? You'd be playing right into their hands as you could possibly skip over the key on trying to save time. Seeing no other option this far in, you stay the course and open the next door.
