Chapter #5

You Run Away From Julie (The Legion)

by: Sly F Author IconMail Icon
You're running as fast as your feet will let you, every so often looking over your shoulder to make sure you're gaining ground on the tantalizing but terrifying legionnaire.

Oddly as you grow closer and closer to the abandoned lodge, the air around you gets closer and colder. You're shocked to realize that it's begun to snow, something you definitely don't remember from the weather forecast when you and your friends were planning this camping trip. There's already a thin layer of snow on the ground around you, blades of wilting gray grass poking through.

You make your way around mounds of rock and rotting wooden wall segments towards the dilapidated lodge. As bad of a state as it is in, it's still a large, imposing structure. Easy to see how it was visible from such a long distance, but you can't understand how you could possibly have never known it was here before.

Most of the enormous windows in front of the lodge are breaking or are already completely broken, with only small fragments of glass still clinging to the frames as any evidence they were ever even there. You step through one and enter the lodge.

There's a roaring fire going in the fireplace. You have no idea who could have lit it, or when, or how, but you're grateful to have it to warm up a little bit, if even just for a few seconds. You know you can't stay still, illuminated by the flames, very long in this situation or you'll be a sitting duck.

As you rub your hands in the fireplace's warmth, you look out through the broken windows on to the clearing. Your breath catches in your throat when you see the bright colors of Julie's costume appear over a hill, a stark contrast to the blindingly white moonlight snow.

You feel pretty confident you've spotted her before she could spot you, so you try to be sneaky. You crouch low to the ground and softly creep around the corners of the lodge, looking for an escape plan.

Your heartbeat is so heavy you can hear it pounding harder and harder as she must be getting closer and closer. Pretty soon, you can hear the unsettling heavy metal of her mix-tape as she gets close enough for you to hear it blaring through her headphones.

Desperately, you turn on the nearest flight of stairs and fly up them. You weigh your options. You could jump out the window. It's a big drop, but not far enough to kill you. If she's still searching for you inside, it might allow you to make your escape, even if you have to do so on broken legs from the impact. Then again, if she is able to spot you, you're as good as dead already if you try to limp away from her.

You can hear her music again. No time left to think. There's a storage locker nearby, spray-painted blood red. As quietly as possible, you open the door on its squeaky rusty hinges, squeeze inside of it, and pull the door softly but securely shut with you inside.

The music's getting much louder, and you can hear Julie's fashionable but practical shoes creaking up the stairs. You watch through the grate as she makes it to the top and then runs right past your hiding place. But you're not ready to stop holding your breath yet. Pretty soon, she doubles back. She stops right in front of your locker and then turns towards it. And then she just stands in front of it for what feels like forever. You could swear she's looking right through the grate, right at you. Even without being able to see her eyes through her mask and headscarf, you feel like she's staring directly into your eyes, and straight into your soul.
