Chapter #5

Inspector Marianne

    by: Ponymon Author IconMail Icon
The one who entered the room was none other than Marianne, one of Raphael’s fellow students from the Golden Deer house. Raphael was relieved to see someone he knew, especially someone as gentle as Marianne. He always thought she was too quiet and didn’t open up to people, though she had a fondness for animals. She could even communicate with them! Raphael had yet to figure out how to do that too.

“Um… hello?” The giant girl quietly called. The usually quiet girl’s voice was amplified for the tiny Raphael, though it was still quieter than what he thought a giant would sound like.

“I guess Marianne isn’t a ‘fee fi fo fum’ kind of gal.” Raphael quipped, keeping a positive attitude in spite of his dangerous situation.

Marianne, meanwhile, was very confused. She had just been visiting Dorte when she heard a crashing noise in one of the other buildings. She had expected to find someone inside but there was no one here. Nervously, she held her hands against her chest and moved past the door into the room. Surely there had to be someone here.

“Alright Raphael, just gotta get Marianne’s attention and you’ll be set. ...But how should I do that?” Raphael looked at the materials around him. He couldn’t really use anything to get Marianne’s attention. Nothing but broken glass or liquid near him. “Maybe if I just stay here and shout she’ll be able to hear.” Raphael’s decided on the simplest conclusion.

In the meantime, Marianne had gotten a good look at the stack of supplies that Raphael had made. “This looks like the stuff students have to pick up from the market in town. I wonder why it’s in the stable?” She wasn’t chosen for this task very often, but she guessed that it didn’t require stopping at the stables. “This is a big stack too…” She trailed off as she wiped a hand on top of a box. She rubbed her fingers together, checking for signs of dust or neglect.

“Aw man. I hope she doesn’t think I’m slackin’.” Raphael thought. “Hey Marianne! Look over here!” He shouted as loudly as he could. He knew he was pretty loud, plenty of folks told him that all the time.

Unfortunately for Raphael, even his shouting couldn’t reach Marianne when she was that far away. She was too occupied with her investigation to hear. Anxiously, she circled the pile to look for the source of the crash she heard. As she circled around, she noticed the broken shelf and shattered bottles of liquid. “Oh, is this it?”

Raphael’s heart began racing when Marianne looked in his direction. He was used to looking down at people when he was normal. So seeing Marianne loom over him in the distance was incredibly nerve wracking. The anxious feeling was only made worse once she started approaching him. The sight of the gentle Marianne become larger and larger, accompanied by the bombing of her footsteps, made Raphael break into a cold sweat.

Marianne looked over the mess Raphael carefully, checking her boot when she realized she stepped in some kind of liquid. She guessed that this was what had caused that noise, maybe it had fallen from the top of the pile? That idea was quickly removed from her mind when she noticed the partially collapsed shelf, currently hanging by one of its hinges. “That’s strange… I’m sure that wouldn’t just collapse. Perhaps whoever broke it ran off?”

Marianne turned to look towards the door once again. She hadn’t seen anyone leave in a hurry, but someone breaking the shelf made the most sense. Worried that she was going to leave him behind, Raphael began shouting again and waved up at the giant girl. “Marianne! Look down here! By the mess!” Whether it was Raphael’s shouting or something else, Marianne turned herself back to the mess. Carefully, she got onto her knees and looked at the mess, picking up a shard of glass and looking it over.

“These were obviously some kind of concoction, but what did they do? I hope they’re nothing like what Claude makes.” She mumbled the last part, nervous about anyone hearing her say something unpleasant.

“No, I’d dare say they’re worse.” Raphael grumbled, wiping at his head. Eager to be seen, he continued to shout and gesture to Marianne as she examined his mess. Surely she would be able to see him when she was this close. He might of shrunk, but he knew he wasn’t that hard to see… probably.

Marianne looked over the mess with casual interest, she had no idea that the well being of one of her classmates was dependent on her careful eyes...
