As it's all going on he feels inadiquate next to Harry all he has done after orders to give the diary to someone to restore his life Lucius tried to put it into Ginny's cauldron Draco nicked it instead. He soon finds a Tom riddle that is secretly into very heavy guys and sees in Draco a perfect target for this, and Draco always wishing to just be doted on gladly accepts.
Scenario 2: After he fails in 6th year or what he assumes is failure Voldemort is so impressed with Draco's success that he allows himself a reward. To finally consider Draco worthy of his affections at first he is disturbed but soon grows to love and love taking advantage of the power he has over everyone as soon Voldemort grow possessive of Draco..Especially as Draco grows fatter and Draco loves it.
