Ann Darrow permanence on Skull Island seemed to be permanent.
She hadn’t the faintest clue of where her friends were, although knowing the place they all were, she was mostly wishing they had managed to escape safely, instead of waiting for her return. This way of thinking came mostly from the extremely good treatment that she was getting from Kong.
The humongous Ape had truly taken her in sympathy, as she saw it, for each and every day, sometime even multiple times each day, he brought her something cooked for her to eat. Since the episode with the massive dinosaur, he seemed to realize that she couldn’t eat all that much and so he had started to bring her treats of smaller size. Although, this created a new problem all of its own.
That day for example, as the sun shined right above their heads, Kong had brought to her a four hundred pounds tiger or something like that. She noticed that he had brought her the carcass without ‘cooking’ it first, as if he wanted to have her approval.
She naturally complimented him for the catch but, before he could bring it away to be ‘cooked’ she motioned him to wait. At first, he didn’t seem to understand but, as she signed with her hands, he remembered that she had done similar gestures when she had thought him of the bright warm thing. Interested, Kong waited as he began to see that his pet was doing something to the meal, he had brought to her.
Ann, still no more a survivalist as any other woman of her times, knew that with all the fur covering it, that tiger like thing couldn’t just be cooked over a fire. So, using her roughly sharpened stone she tried again and again until she managed to remove the fur and the skin from the carcass, all of her motions always being observed by Kong.
With the animal skinned, although roughly so, Ann brought some pieces of it over the fire, leaving them to cook, as much as she could at least. The ape was not sure why his pet worked so hard on that prey but considering the results with the meat over the bright warm thing, he was willing to try and emulate what he had just seen.
For the time being, since he wanted to surprise anew his pet, Kong brought back to her large chunks of meat already warmed. As he watched her eat those chunks, hearing her throaty sounds of satisfaction, he was feeling something akin to satisfaction. His pet was not one of his own, but, as he had observed it he was starting to realize that it seemed to be a miniature copy of him, with much less fur. So, he decided to do all he could to keep it happy.
Ann, as days passed with these constant feasts noticed that her clothes seemed to be tighter on her body than she remembered but, considering she had bigger things to worry about, she quickly dismissed that thought for a later time. Then, after one of the cooked meals provided to her by Kong, she suddenly noticed that after eating her ‘lunch’ she had been nibbling one of the few fruits that Kong had brought to her.
The same that at first, she didn’t seem able to digest. As she kept consuming it with little bites, she began to believe that probably her body had began adjusting to the food of that island, which meant that she had actually a good survival chance there.
As much as she enjoyed the slabs of cooked meats that Kong brought to her, over and over, she knew that her body was in need also of fruit and herbs to survive, so finding out that she could digest them, finally let her be much more at ease about her permanence on the island.
It was then that she realized she had completely lost any hope of returning to her home on the mainland. At first, she was a bit saddened by it but, considering that she was guest to a massive, powerful and proud creature which seemed to be happy in making Her happy, she realized that there wasn’t much back home that could be of equal value. Still, when she motioned to Kong, that evening, that she could have also fruits, he began bringing her both the cooked meat and the fruits he found around the island.
Ann, not wanting to offend her friend, tried her best to show to him how much she enjoyed his gifts.
Day after day, a sort of routine began to take place.
Every day, when the sun was at the top and when it was setting, Kong would bring to his lair, and to his pet, both the meat and the fruits, always by the, for him, handful, passing then some time with the tiny creature ‘speaking’ and learning. Still, when roughly a month had passed since Ann’s arrival in his lair, he felt himself ready to show her what had he learned in those weeks while he had been ‘hunting’.
When night came, Ann patted her still somewhat full stomach.
That day she had felt particularly hungry, with no real reason to say the truth, and so she had enjoyed thoroughly the meals that her friend had brought her at lunch, while nibbling on what remained of it and on the fruits, which she had somewhat stockpiled in the freshness of the lair, throughout the day. Now, as evening was setting, she felt her tummy rumbling a bit, as if nervous that her now scheduled evening meal seemed to be late.
Still, sitting near the cave on some soft mushroom’s heads, she waited for her friend to arrive. As it had become usual, she smelled the air first, since at around that time the wind changed direction and brought to her nostrils a delicious scent, a bit different than usual. As she stood up, she saw the massive head of her friend coming into her view but, what surprised her the most was that he had brought with him something different this time. Something that made her happy and enticed her very much.
Within his arms, laying on some palm leaves, there was a large piece of meat, roasted to a fire but, with some fruits around it. As she saw the gift he had brought her, she realized that it was yet another thing he had learned from just by watching her. As her dinner was brought in front of her, and she looked at it more carefully, she realized that it had to be one of the same tigers he had brought to her a couple of weeks before. She noticed that since the meat had been carved just as she had done previously, removing the organs and the skin.
Beaming in happiness, she turned toward her friend and hugged one of his fingers in happiness, something that she had started doing recently to try and let him be aware of how happy he was making her.
Kong saw how ecstatic his pet had been at his surprise and was glad for it. He had tried himself that strange warm meat with fruits but, he didn’t seem to notice anything different from any other warmed meats. Still, since his pet was so happy, he was happy himself. Also to his delight, he saw that the pet greedily went at the warmed meat with fruits, managing to eat almost half of it before collapsing in a digestive sleep.
As the days progressed more or less in the same way, Kong began to notice that his little pet was finally starting to grow and to eat more than before. For the massive Ape it had to be a sign of good health if his pet was growing and so, he began to bring to his lair, slightly bigger preys and more fruits, than before. The tiny creature didn’t seem to notice the change, as it continued happily to eat whatever he brought to it.
It was true, Ann had grown so addicted to the flavors of the various kind of meats and fruits that Kong brought to her that she barely noticed how larger her portion were becoming week after week. Only when her clothes began to rip and tear, she wondered about her figure for a while, on how what she was eating was affecting her physique. But, as she mulled it over, considering also the fact that she hadn’t had a bath in almost a month and that her clothes were continuously under stress by the harshness of the place she was, she voluntarily rejected the idea of her gaining weight, deciding to wait some more substantial proofs before starting to worry.
So she basically did nothing about it, simply continuing to eat every meals brought to her, while passing the rest of her day working on a special project of hers and nibbling on fruits. As weeks passed, as she basically kept her lazy lifestyle, eating whatever Kong brought to her and snacking while waiting for her main meals, she kept growing larger and fatter. It was by no means a large difference but, already some parts of her began jiggling more than they ever did before.
Still, as much as she was enjoying the meals that her friend brought to her every day, she still wanted to try and teach as much as she could to her friend, trying at her best to making him more ‘humane’.
For that reason, during the idle time between one meal and the other, she began to work out something like the sign language that the mutes had been using for centuries.
By error and trial, she began to create come sort of scheme that she hoped would be useful to ‘talk’ with Kong. She knew that her friend wasn’t just a beast, Kong was way more than intelligent than anyone had ever thought before, as it was shown by his interest in learning and in taking care of her well being for so long.
