Chapter #5
Zombies in the sewer
by: Unknown
"Zombies?" you ask incredulously.
"That's right," the mayor's assistant replies, either oblivious or ignoring your reaction. "And the city pays better rates than anywhere else in the kingdom. Good pay and good practice for a new Hero. Very good indeed."
Your shoulders slump in disappointment and you sigh, but with a nod you tell the mayor's assistant that you'll take the job.
"Good, good," he nods. He writes out a note and hands it to you. "Take that to the city's alchemist. He'll set you up with the preventive serum. He'll also supply you with any spell components you need. As long as they're nothing too exotic," the mayor's assistant hurriedly added.
You nod and, with another dramatic sigh, leave the man's office and head to the city's alchemist.
As exciting as yesterday had been, so today was proving to be equally disappointing. When you had started reading the quests on the quest board, they were all asking for adventurers with experience. Most of them specifically said that the recently graduated need not apply.
Then you spotted the advertisement from the mayor's office. It was advertising a quest in the city's catacombs, to deal with an emergency facing the city.
When the advertisement welcomed new Academy graduates to apply, you should have been suspicious. You should have been more suspicious that even though the quest came from the mayor's office, it directed applicants to apply to the mayor's assistant in charge of cisterns and sewers.
But none of this connected in your mind. You were just excited that there was a quest for you to go on.
And then you found out the quest was to go zombie hunting in the sewers.
The fact that the city's sewers had a zombie infestation was not surprising. Put enough dead bodies and random alchemist's dumpings in the same space, and you're going to get animated corpses sooner or later. Usually sooner.
The thing is, zombies aren't really that dangerous. They move too slow and if you know you're going to be dealing with zombies, you can take an immunity potion that's good for a day. Even without the immunity potion, everyone in the Academy knows how to make the cure for a zombie bite or scratch. And since you have two days to take the cure, the only way you can be turned into a zombie is either bad luck or stupidity.
This won't be the first time you've fought a zombie. At the Academy, animated corpses were used to practice on all the time. Heck, as long as they didn't come at you en masse, you could probably kill them off with your staff and dagger.
This wasn't going to be an adventure. The only reason the mayor's office was hiring anyone to deal with the zombies was that they were getting so numerous. they were blocking tunnels and proving to be a problem to the sewer workers.
When you show up at the city's alchemist with a voucher for supplies and the immunity potion, you learn that
