Chapter #7

Not Noticing the “Little” Things

*BOOM!* *BOOM!* *BOOM!* *BOOM!*

The room quakes uncontrollably as Betty Ann makes her way toward her shrunken son, the powerful rumbling finally ceasing as she reaches the bed. Tony stares directly upwards tracking the form of his Statue of Liberty - sized mother for what seemed like an eternity. Betty Ann casts her gaze down, and Tony once more begins jumping and screaming, begging that he ends up in the protection of his loving mother before the dangers of the shrunken world overtake him.

Tony’s prayers are soon answered when his mom’s gigantic head lowers to his level, her eyes settling on him. “Tony,” her sweet voice thunders, “There you are.” She looks her son over, a quizzical expression of concern on her face. “Sweetheart,” she intones, “Something’s wrong. What is going on?”

“Uh, you see...” Tony stutters, trying time find where to start, Dr. Leonhardt next door...she gave me this chemical...when you gave me my medicine, I...”

“My goodness, I see it now,” Betty Ann cuts him off. “Mommy hasn’t had her good morning kiss yet.”

Tony stares incredulously. “A kiss? Mom, look at me. There’s no way you can...*urk!*“

Tony’s pleading is cut short when a huge, pale hand wraps around his body, squeezing him with unbearable force. He is soon whizzing through the air, into the path of an enormous pair of lips that crash into the side of his tiny face. The noise echoes around his ears, and the sensation is one of his face being pulled off by the world’s most powerful suction device. Both seem to last forever, until the lips finally release their hold, and Tony falls back into the palm of his mother’s hand.

“Mom, what are you doing?” Tony snaps angrily, dizzy and covered in lipstick and Mom-spittle. “Can’t you see how small I am now?”

“Yes, of course I do,” Betty Ann answers. “You’re Mommy’s little baby boy. And I love you so, so much.”

Tony cannot believe what he just heard. His mom didn’t even notice he had shrunk, despite the fact that he was STANDING in the PALM of her HAND. All this dumb woman could think about was mothering him. And then her next words, while ordinarily evoking annoyance and leading to well-meaning discomfort, now filled him with sheer terror and fear for his life: “And now Mommy’s little boy is going to get a big hug!”

“A...hug?!?” Tony stammers. “No, Mom, no! Please not a...” his pleas are cut short as Betty Ann slams him hard against her chest. Betty Ann sighs lovingly as she cuddles her son, failing to notice the tiny pair of feet thrashing vainly beneath her fingers, the only part of his body that was otherwise visible.

Trapped in her grip, Tony is left at the mercy of his oblivious mother. Failing to notice her son’s diminished size, she applies the same strength she uses that Tony finds excessive at his normal size. Now he is stuck between her hand and her bosom, not sure if the unbearable heat or the unrelenting pressure would finish him first. Finally Betty Ann releases her grip in her usual way: by opening up her arms and allowing him to plummet to the floor. Fortunately he was able to land on the mattress, lessening the height of the fall and providing a soft landing surface. As Tony pulls himself back to his feet, once again staring up at his behemoth of a mom.

“Are you sure you’re feeling better, honey?” Betty Ann asks. “Here, let me feel your forehead.” Tony prepares to implore her to notice his situation and act accordingly by gently sending down a single finger. But before a single word can escape his mouth, an immense object blankets him in shadow. Seconds later, his entire body is mashed under his mother’s hand. He is instantly wracked with intense pain, with the sound and sensation of every bone in his body cracking. When she lifts her hand back up, he feels his bones resetting, sits up to discover that like Dr. Leonhardt with her bowling ball, he is unharmed, though in immense pain.

“You’re still a little warm,” Betty Ann muses. Tony struggles to tell her that it was because of the body heat from when she nearly suffocated him moments earlier. “But don’t worry, sweetie, I’ll take care of you all day.”

After being crushed twice in a short period of time, Tony begins to think that he’d be better off braving the shrunken world than the dangers of his loving mother.
