"How did the resistance learn of the base?" Mason asked himself as he rushed down the corridor. Another rumble, louder and stronger than the others shook the ground. He nearly toppled over but caught himself on the wall. He took off again, navigating the maze of tunnels to the lab. He hoped that his brother would be meeting up with him there, as it would do no good if he was the only one there. He needed his brother. And besides that, he was worried for him. Mason had no idea where is brother was within the base. He kept his mind from drifting to the worst possible thoughts. "Please... Logan. Just please make it to the lab safely..." He said to himself.
While he figured it was the Resistance attacking, there were just so many unknowns about the forces. How many people were part of the assault... 25... 50... or more? Was there objective to only damage a World Government base, or was it something else? Could they have gathered intel on the secret operation here? Did they know about the fusion chamber?
Mason stopped himself as he made a wrong turn. "Dammit!" He cursed aloud. His mind was so preoccupied with questions of the enemy that he started running towards the armory on instinct. "Well a weapon would not be such a bad idea to grab..." He told himself. He continued further down the hall and made it to the armory without a problem. He swiped his base key card, and the electric lock buzzed. Mason stepped inside and grabbed an FN Minimi, a light machine gun. He also put on a bullet proof vest and grabbed an extra. Before leaving, he decided to grab a shotgun as well, knowing his brother's favored weapon. It was not like their combined form could wield the two weapons at the same time, or even wear two vests, but just in case, it was an extra precaution.
With the shotgun strapped to his back and the FN Minimi in hand, he sprinted back the way he came. He then turned in the correct direction of the lab. As he ran, the lights began to flicker, before returning to their normal brightness. "They must be trying to go for the generator..." Mason thought aloud. It was a smart play on the Resistance's part. The fusion chamber required a large amount of power to function. Without the power, the super soldiers would not be able to help.
A few minutes later, Mason arrived at the lab, to see a few of the scientists running around busily. "Mason" a man, with a thick accent, called his name.
"Dr. Mudrov" He gave a quick greeting the man. "Is my brother here?"
"No..." Dr. Mudrov repied. "You are the first to arrive. And we are running out of time." Sweat dripped off the older man's forehead. "The base is overwhelmed by the Resistance forces. There... there are so many... And they will soon make it to the generator!"
"Fuck... Where is he?" Mason asked aloud, to no one in particular. If they had a chance of saving the base, he and his brother, and the other super soldier pairs, were going to have to merge. He bit his lip. Now he was worried. He hoped Logan was on the way to the lab, and not caught up in a confrontation with Resistance soldiers. And if the Resistance shuts off power before he, or another pair arrives, there would be nothing they could do. Fighting back would likely result in many casualties on their side. After all, this was more of a research base of operations than a military one.
"Could I be fused with someone from your team? If worst comes to worst?" Mason tried hard to keep his voice level.
"It would not be safe... there are too many risks for people who do not share blood?" Dr. Mudrov answered. "But, I can see if there is someone who could be a safe enough match..." The man turned and began working on the nearest computer.
Mason knew that it was a long shot, but they needed a contingency plan. When he and his brother first arrived, the dangers were explained to them, but given that they were related, the risks were fairly low. In fact, three of the other four pairs were related. There was only one pair who had been long-time friends who happened to also be compatible for a merge. Compatibility was partially due to genetics, and Mason was not sure what the other part had to do with since the fourth pair did not share any DNA.
A noise in the hallway drew his attention. He aimed his weapon into the doorway, waiting for whomever was on the other side. He hoped that they were a friendly.
