Chapter #6

A feeling of home

    by: JOOSHER Author IconMail Icon
Miley shook her head and stood up. If she had to live in this crummy town, she might as well one place of comfort, that being her room. She walked over to the boxes and started opening them. The first one held some of her clothing, and she pushed it close to the wall where she planned to put her dresser.

"Mom's room apparently has a walk-in closet, but I still have to use the same dresser from when I was eight. Well if the moving company brings it." Miley thought to herself as she glanced at some of the clothes she had brought with her. On top of the clothing pile there were a few pairs of skinny jeans, couple pairs of leggings and some t-shirts, with the logo of some old punk band.
But on right on top was a black beanie, she had been given as a parting gift, just a day before she left to move to Sweetwater. It had belonged to one of her friends back home, a girl by the name of Mindy Price. The beanie had been the main part of her look. She was a few years older than Miley and was quite the party girl. This had meant that Miley and her friend group often attended most of the parties in their home town, especially the ones with a lot of alcohol.

But now that was all in the past.
Miley picked up the beanie, pulled her blond hair back a bit, and put it on.
Looking at her reflection on her phone she felt satisfied. "Yeah, I think I can rock this for a while."
"Should probably text Mindy, or anyone else"

With the slight feeling of homesickness Miley went back to the boxes. She put up some posters and started putting up some shelves and nightstand, that were left next to the doorway. The more larger objects were yet to arrive for Miley's room, as Janice had prioritized Chrissie's stuff to be brought in on the first day. Mainly so that Chrissie could set up her "study" and get a headstart on studying before school would start for the sisters a few days from now. The fact that they had to move after summer vacation had already ended and school had started, bothered Chrissie. At least more then it did Miley. But luckily, as schools had only been open for a few weeks, Chrissie reasoned she could easily catch up on studying. In reality with her smarts, she was most likely still ahead of most school curriculums.

In fact as Miley was in her room emptying boxes, Chrissie was in her own, already making sure she had all her school supplies. Her nap, after filling her gut, had been more of an power nap, or more of an "reading the last chapter of her science fiction novel while laying on her bed" kind of a nap. After she had finished the novel, she couldn't keep resting, even if she still felt like her stomach was filled to the brim. She just couldn't resist the urge to prepare her study space.

Chrissie walked over to the desk, that she and her mother had managed to get upstairs just before the welcome wagon had arrived. It was nicely tucked in the corner next to large window looking out into their spacious yard. Chrissie quickly started placing some of her stuff from the moving boxes onto the desk.
School books - Check
Her many notebooks - Check
All the pencils and rulers and other supplies - Check
Her laptop, with the charger attached to the wall - Check
Everything was as close to perfection as they could be, at least for now. Chrissie would likely get new books when school started and who knows what she might need in the future so she can get the most out of her education.

Once Chrissie was done setting up, she stepped back and took a look around her, somewhat empty, room and then out of the window next to her study space. She look out into yard. It was large and open yard with a few trees and bushes at the very back. There were a couple of tables and deckchairs, awfully big, tucked away closer to the house. There was also a large picket fence separating their backyard from the neighbors'. Being on the second floor, Chrissie could see past over the fence into one of the neighbor's yards, where she saw a younger woman seemingly sunbathing next to a very large pool.
The woman was quite overweight, likely over 300 lbs, and wore a rather revealing bikini. At first Chrissie though maybe she was looking into the yard of Betty Holland, as she had mentioned owning a pool, but after realizing that the woman she saw sunbathing had a much darker skin tone compared to Betty, she concluded it was likely not the case. Though it was hard to tell from a distance, and with the fat around the woman's face, Chrissie estimated that she wasn't that old, likely around Miley's age. She then saw three other people enter the yard, two men and one other woman, probably all around the same age. The other woman was also on the fatter side. Seeing them made Chrissie realize, that the woman was likely just waiting for her friends to arrive rather then actually sunbathing, that and also the fact that the sun was setting.
If they were around Miley's age, perhaps Chrissie should try to get her to meet them. But on the other hand Miley seemed too busy brooding over the move right now to socialize.

While the two sisters were upstairs doing what they could do to set up their rooms, Janice was downstairs in her room and had kept true to her word and taken a nap. And, honestly, she did deserve some rest. She had to wake up before sunrise to make sure everything was ready for the move, then drive the long journey all the way to Sweetwater, then make her new home ready to be lived in and then deal with bubbly personalities of the two neighbors, who had come to say hi. All that combined with the very delicious and very filling apple pie had made her fall asleep almost as soon as she had laid on her new king sized bed.

But even her daydreaming wasn't without some stress. She still couldn't help but think about the divorce and her ex-husband.
"Was it my fault. Maybe we could have worked things out. Should I have tried harder?"
"NO! I can't keep thinking like this! It was his fault, he pushed us away. Sweetwater is a new start. We can be happy here."
Eventually during her nap Janice was able to move on from these thoughts, at least for the moment. What came after, most likely fueled by the taste of the delicious pie that still lingered on her taste buds, was a dream where she was in a grocery store. She was walking down the aisles, just showing pies, cakes and other sweets into a shopping cart, which could apparently hold a limitless amount of items.
A weird dream for sure, but it did help Janice sleep off some of the stress caused by the move here.

Eventually Janice woke up from her well deserved rest and...
