Lisa Loud, the four-year old genius of the Loud family, was currently working on another one of her science experiments in her room. She was always careful with her projects and often tried to keep everyone in her family safe from them, most of the time. Lisa was usually hopeful that her contributions to science would benefit humanity in a way. In fact, she was so engrossed in her scientific research that she would often spend a lot of time working on her projects and less time with other people.
Her mother was beginning to worry that Lisa really wasn't a very social child. It was true she now had a new friend in her kindergarten class, which was a good thing for her. But even so, Lisa still spent more time on her experiments than hanging out with other kids her own age, and for a four-year old, even one as intelligent as Lisa, having friends to play with was an important part of child development.
Rita then stepped into Lisa's room and decided to talk things out with her. "Lisa, sweetie?" she said.
Lisa then turned around to greet her mother. "Oh. Hello maternal unit. I can't talk right now, mother. I'm busy working on something important here." Lisa turned back to her desk as her mother sighed.
"Lisa, don't you think you're spending a little too much time on these science projects?" Rita asked.
"What are you talking about? I'm just trying to benefit humanity by making a substantial contribution to-" Lisa began before Rita kneeled down and cut her off.
"Lisa! You're four years old and all you do is work on these projects. Don't you think it would be more fun to play with other kids instead?" Rita said while putting her hand on Lisa's shoulder.
"Now mother. I see the point you're trying to make, but, I believe that my scientific endeavors need my attention more." Lisa replied.
Rita sighed. "Look honey. Don't you have a friend at school now?" Lisa nodded in response. "And yet you still don't hang out with her enough. If you keep spending less time with other kids now, like if they liked science as much as you do, for instance, then do you think they would still be your friends when you grow up?"
Lisa thought about what Rita said and it made her think of that one boy in her class named David, who was just as versed in science as she was. She liked David now and didn't consider if he would still want to be her friend when they grow up. "I think I can see your point, mother."
"Good Lisa. Now, I've decided that since it's the weekend, how would you like to spend the day with some kids from your class?" Rita offered. Lisa was unsure, however, so Rita figured it would be to do it anyway before she changes her mind. "Okay Lisa, I'll tell you what. I'm going to set up a play date with your classmates and you're going to do it. Okay?" Rita demanded.
"Okay mother. I guess I can take some time off from my experiments," Lisa agreed, and sighed in defeat.
"Wonderful. I'll make the call. Oh, and by the way Lisa, since everyone's going out today, I'm having Lincoln stay and look after you and your friends." Rita added.
"What? Why Lincoln?" Lisa asked.
"Lincoln doesn't have anything to do today so he's going to babysit all of you." Rita answered. She then left Lisa's room and made the call to a few of the parents of Lisa's classmates. The only problem was that many of them didn't want their kids to go as they knew how crazy the Loud family can be. Fortunately, there were a few people who decided that it would be a good idea. Rita was able to convince Darcy's mother to spend the day at the Loud house, since Darcy and Lisa were close friends, and Darcy even managed to invite her other classmate Charlotte Yang to come as well.
After making the call, Rita went to Lincoln's room to tell him all about it. "Lincoln?" Rita said, opening the door to find Lincoln reading a comic on his bed.
"Yeah, Mom?" he replied.
"I'm going out, sweetie. And I've scheduled a play date for Lisa. Her friends from school are coming to play with her, and you're going to babysit while I'm out."
"What?!" Lincoln said in surprise. "Why do I have to do it, Mom. Can't one of my older sisters do it?" Lincoln asked.
"Everyone else had plans today, Lincoln. So, it's just going to be you and Lisa's friends. I want you to feed them and make sure they're all okay. Can you do that?" Rita explained.
"I don't know, Mom."
"Come on, Lincoln. You've babysat your little sisters before, this should be no different."
"Well, I guess I can do it." Lincoln said.
"Wonderful, honey." Rita said and kissed her son on the head. "They're going to be here any minute, so make sure you open the door for them." Rita then exited Lincoln's room and left the house.
Lincoln sat in his room for another minute or so before turning to the audience. "I know what you're thinking. I should just roll with it and do what my Mom said, right? Well in this case, it isn't such a bad thing since it's just babysitting kindergarten girls. And you're right. The only problem is, that it involves Lisa." Lincoln explained.
"I wouldn't exactly call her a fun person to be a fun person to pal around with. It's just that her idea of fun isn't really everyone's cup of tea." He began. "It usually involves someone seeing one of her long, driven math lectures, or even being on the receiving end of one of her crazy experiments." Lincoln sighed feeling like he was going to be in for some pain. "Well, I guess I'd better check on her."
Lincoln then made his way to Lisa's room to talk to her before her play date. "Hey Lisa." Lincoln looked in the room and was confused to find Lisa at her desk still working on her science experiment. "Lisa, what are you doing?" Lincoln asked.
"What do you think elder, male sibling? I'm working on my latest advancement in modern technology." Lisa answered.
"But, Lisa. Mom set you up on a play date today. Your friends are going to be here soon." Lincoln shot back.
"Oh pish posh, Lincoln. This needs my attention much more right now."
Lincoln sighed and put a hand on her shoulder. "Come on, Lis. You have to do this. Mom went to all this trouble to show you how much fun you can have with other kids. So why don't you just put...whatever this is on hold. Okay?"
"Lincoln. This invention is one that I've been working on for quite a while and I was just about to put the finishing touches on it. Can't you just entertain them until I'm done with it?"
"Sorry, Lisa. I can't do that. They're your friends and it appears that you could use some improvement in your social skills. Now come on." Lincoln said as he tried to pull Lisa away from her desk. But Lisa tried to resist him.
"Just a few more minutes!" Lisa said trying to hold on to her desk. But Lincoln wouldn't let go and kept pulling on her. Lisa kept hanging on to her desk and in her haste to not let go, she tried to reach for her computer and ended up having her hand slip over the keyboard, resulting in her tapping a few random buttons. She then noticed something unusual on her screen and grew worried.
Lisa thought it would cause her machine to act up and didn't want it to cause any problems, so she decided to calm Lincoln down a bit. "Wait, Lincoln. Stop for a second!" Lisa urged, causing Lincoln to let her go gently.
"Are you going to come quietly then, Lisa?" Lincoln asked with a scowl.
"Lincoln, I believe that in my effort to resist you dragging me downstairs, I just typed something unintentionally random on my computer." Lisa answered pointing to her invention, which was beginning to flare up. It looked like a miniature dome with what looked like a lighthouse on top of it. And Lincoln didn't like how it was acting haywire.
"Look, Lincoln. I don't want this to get out of hand or anything and I definitely don't want you to have to see what happens then. So how about a deal?" Lisa offered. "How about if you just wait downstairs for my guests and just entertain them for a bit, and I promise that after I finish fixing this, I'll come right down to join them for our little scheduled social interaction."
Lincoln thought about it and looked at the invention, and he didn't take kindly to how it looked like it could be troublesome at the moment, given his experience with some of Lisa's past inventions. "You promise you'll do it after you fix this?" Lincoln asked and Lisa nodded nervously to give him her word. "Okay. Just try to fix it quickly, Lisa." Lincoln was about to leave her room and go downstairs as Lisa got to work on stopping her machine.
