"How could this have happened?" Worried, Mom demanded. "Wasn't the ship fenced off, with warning signs posted?"
"Children, human and Metaturian alike, often ignore phrases such as 'off limits' and 'keep out,' when there is a promise of fun to be had." Ruefully, Dr. Olkaela explained. "What we need to focus on now is not blame, but damage control."
"Will Rennie be okay, Doctor?" Concerned, Dad demanded.
Dr. Olkaela sighed. "Your daughter will be in for a... frustrating transition." Calmly, she replied. "Much like a human's transitioning from male to female, Miss Rennie will be experiencing a new type of puberty; one which will be challenging on a mental, physical, and social level." Pausing, she added, "Your daughter will survive this, but I fear she is no longer human."
Mom began to sob, hugging me, while Dad merely sighed, shaking his head. "What can we do from here?" Serious, he asked.
"I suggest we start by discussing the 'dos and do nots' of Metaturian health and development." Calmly, Dr. Olkaela replied. "From there, I can assign a Metaturian social worker, to help you guide your daughter through her transition."
"I have a few Metaturian friends I can call upon for advice." Shaken, Mom said. "Tell me,... has this happened before?"
Dr. Olkaela nodded. "There have been rumors of it happening on other continents, but I hesitate to speak of them." Wincing, she replied. "They were not as fortunate."
Mom turned pale, and Dad turned to me with a scolding expression. "You were lucky, young lady." Serious, he said.
That was when I began to cry.
Dad's face immediately softened, and he joined Mom in comforting me. "We'll figure this out." Softly, he said. "Nothing will change the fact you are our little princess."
