Chapter #4

Bryce no longer thinks he's small

    by: BlueBelts Author IconMail Icon
Patiently, Bryce waited for something to happen. Paying close attention to how tense the muscles in his legs were, he expected to feel them growing larger, finally stretching his small form up higher to validate his claim— but as time passed he began feeling silly. He felt something lift, like the chip on his shoulder had fallen off. His surrounding friends watched Bryce begin grinning, not only did he feel silly, he was humbled as insecurity seeped from his mind.

Funny... I don't feel any taller but something happened, I don't feel small I guess? Bryce thought to himself mid-stretch, he wiggled his fingers and looked down to his feet. Even looking up towards Alex didn't spark the self-doubt and vulnerability it usually did.

Axel noticed the strange subtle look his friend was giving him and wondered why he was acting so strange. Neither of the girls knew what to think of his sudden self-appraisal, he was acting as if he wasn't used to his own body.

"Krrrrrt! Earth to the overmuscled shorty?" said Penelope finally, waving a hand across his distant eyes and mimicking the tone of spacecraft communication. She expected some kind of backhanded comment from him as usual but found it even stranger when he simply brushed off the comment. In fact, he played along—

"Krrrrt! I hear you loud and clear, sorry I kinda — spaced — out there."

Axel let out a pained moan but his awful pun got a rise from Maya.

"That was terrible" Penelope replied, "are you alright? You seem a little distracted today, like you're uncertain about something?"

Bryce shrugged, he himself didn't understand what was going on, of course he was coming off as distracted. He knew it was still too early to tell the others what he thought was happening, he needed more evidence first. That last change hadn't happened the way it was supposed to, he didn't entirely know what he'd done to his own mind and although he felt more liberated he didn't know exactly why and that bothered him.

Ruffling his messy brown locks, Bryce gave another lazy shrug, "What are you worrying about me for?" He asked trying to avoid changing himself further with a real answer— then automatically poked fun trying to take the focus from himself, "You must've finally developed some feelings for me— ey Pen?"

He playfully shoved the lesbian on her arm but hesitated when he realized what he'd done a little too late. He'd already spoken. Penelope's eyes fluttered peculiarly, her brown eyes widened and paled as she stumbled backwards. Her head had started spinning just before Bryce pushed her meaning she was taken completely by surprise.

"Gilipollas!" she blurted out, steadying herself with her well-built calves. That boy didn't know his own strength, how was he so strong being that small? She flashed him an angry glare but quickly saw how worried his expression was and felt her heart thump hard against her chest. Hold on. What did he just say? "Perdón?!" she cried out a little too loudly before catching her tongue. Penelope could feel her heart start racing faster and a restrictive lump formed in her throat, was she being too obvious.

"Hey, sorry Pen, I was only messing around." replied an anxious Bryce. Dios Mio, even when he's apologising he's cute...
Penelope felt like slapping herself, what had gotten into her— she'd always had a thing for smaller girls like Maya or Tiff but Bryce was such a strange exception to her type in so many crucial ways to her.

Bryce could already tell something was really wrong, Pen was looking at him with different eyes, even if she was clearly trying to hide it, or maybe even suppress it. Either way, it was obvious, especially considering her regular unconcerned, loose attitude with him. Honestly she looked kinda adorable right now, standing before him was a more vulnerable side of the girl he knew. One he'd only rarely seen. He paused, wanting to test the power of his words a little more he wondered if this accidental change really the way to do it?
