Chapter #4Into the seaside grasspatch by: sneakyk You stand at the very edge of the sea, looking off into the vast waters of route 21. The scent of salty seawater mixes with the scents of the soil and grass around you, the warmth of the summer morning remaining a constant. The waters of Route 21 are relatively shallow, but their depths vary wildly. Averaging at perhaps 3 feet, the route is more than deep enough to host a variety of small marine life that is nevertheless gigantic to you. Islands of sand are speckled across the route. You can actually see distant people standing upon some of them, as well as a few Krabby. These islands form natural checkpoints for land-dwellers, but serve as natural bottlenecks for marine life. The population here is almost surely going to be dominated by Swimmers, Fishers, and Tubers, for whatever it's worth.
Staring out into the sea route, you are more than a little hesitant to dip in. Tentacool are a known traveling hazard in shallow seas, and at your tiny size they would be a vastly greater threat. Although the waters are relatively clear, you still don't have a good enough view to pick up potentially fast-moving underwater threats either. Rather than risk having your digested remains scattered across the seas as aquatic excreta, you decide to take another path.
You approach the fence to the side of the route and peak through the gaps between its bars. To an ordinary sized person this fence might make transit difficulty, you can easily pass through its bars! The grass beyond the fence, however, is a far more formidable obstacle to one of your size. No doubt wild Pokemon lie here, but at least you won't be as out-of-your element here as you would be in the sea. Besides. It'll afford you some shade from that oppressive sun.
As you make your way through the underbrush, you can hear the sounds of wild Rattata trampling about through the underbrush. Crap. Crap. CRAP. Was this a mistake? THUD. THUD. THUD. Hearing the sounds of an approaching predator, you dive down on your belly. KTHOOM. The paw of a Raticate smashes into the dirt right beside you, sending flakes of dampened soil flying. You do your best to stifle your scream as the enormous rodent stands in place, no doubt surveying the are. Afraid of getting seen, you crawl towards a nearby leaf and hide under it.
After a minute-long eternity of your tiny heart pounding in terror, the Raticate stomps off. You remain hidden beneath the leaf for a moment before emerging from under it, and quickly resume your journey through the underbrush. Soon, you begin to hear the sounds of a boyish (or tomboyish?) voice humming a simple tune, accompanied by the sound of splashing water. This could only be a human.
Already afraid of the Pokemon surrounding you, you approach the voice and catch a glimpse of the towering back of a lean somewhat androgynous giant clad in a straw hat, yellow tunic, and black form-fitting shirt underneath. You spot a pair of purple boots resting to the side of this mysterious giant(ess?), who seems to be kicking their feet against the water in a carefree act of entertainment. Who could this giant be? Perhaps you could get their attention...or not. Judging by the premonitions you had earlier, you can't be certain that humans would be any gentler than Pokemon... indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
