1) As a muggleborn Hermione wasn't vaccinated for magical diseases such as Dragon Pox or Shrinking Violet at the same time her peers would have, coming to bite her in the plump rear when she catchs the latter during her Hogwarts years
2) As a muggleborn Hermione wasn't supposed to be smarter than her pureblood peers, at least not in their eyes. So it wasn't much of a stretch for one of them (most likely a Slytherin, but any house will do) to decide to put her in her place and cut her down to size
3) Hermione's thirst for knowledge was unmatched by anyone, but maybe the Black family library in Grimauld Place wasn't the best place to learn new spells in, especially given dark magic backfire was highly likely for such a young and inexperienced witch
4) Given how stuborn and headstrong Hermione could be, especially about either studying or something she felt to be in the right about, it's no wonder Fred and George decide to use her as a test subject for one of their newer pranking tools, a curse that would shrink her every time she tried to be a bossy little know it all, or work herself into a stressful frenzy (such as the week before the exams)
