“Come on, Beck,” Heather encouraged, “We can’t be afraid. For all we know, mom is going to leave right after breakfast, so we have to get to her fast.”
Rebecca sighed, “You’re right.”
“Just think of it like an adventure,” Heather suggested. “Like ‘The Journey Through Delilah’s Lair,’ it will help.”
“So,” Rebecca half smiled as she got to her feet, “You want me to think of Delilah like some fearsome dragon?”
“It could help,” Heather explained, “Of course, instead of being eaten, this dragon might hug us to death.”
The girls started walking out of the room, “I guess there are worse ways to go,” Rebecca remarked. As the duo walked down the hall, they were presented with their first obstacle; the stairs. “How do we get down?”
“We drop from step to step,” Heather explained.
“Are you sure about this?” Rebecca asked.
“Relax,” Heather assured her sister, “I’ve done this before when I was even smaller.” Heather slowly laid down on the edge of the top step and dropped down. “See?” Heather asked, “Nothing to it.”
Rebecca followed her sister’s lead and slid down the step. “This starts to burn after a while,” Rebecca remarked once the two approached the last few steps.
“Well,” Heather responded, “Pajamas aren’t exactly the best clothes for this.”
“Good thing we're almost done,” Rebecca remarked as the two finally hit the hardwood of the entryway.
Heather looked to the entryway to the living room where Delilah was no doubt waiting, “You ready for this?”
“Just like taking a walk in the park,” Rebecca responded.
“Exactly,” Heather smiled, “Just bigger, and with carpeting, and with a giant toddler.”
“Let’s agree right now,” Rebecca spoke, “If one of us gets caught, the other doesn’t play the hero.”
“Right,” Heather agreed, “We run to mom.”
The two girls slowly crept to the edge of the entryway, and Heather looked around, “She’s on her play mat,” Heather summarized.
The sisters looked over the edge and saw their baby sister Delilah sitting in the living room and giving one of her cloth dolls a hug. “Kiss!” Delilah announced as she planted a big kiss on the toy's face. The smooch lasted for several minutes before Delilah lifted the doll away, leaving a bridge of drool. Both sisters couldn’t help but notice that the doll was around their size.
“Remember,” Heather told her sister, “Not a sound.” Rebecca nodded.
As the two sister’s tiptoed past the entryway, Heather gestured to the nearby couch, and Rebecca nodded. The pair waited until Delilah looked away before dashing under the sofa. There was a split second between Delilah looking back and Rebecca getting her left foot under the furniture. For a moment, Delilah paused and seemed to glance in the girl’s direction before her attention returned to her toys.
Both girls breathed a sigh of relief and looked ahead. The kitchen was only a two-minute run; however, Delilah had scattered some toys on the floor between the girls and the kitchen. The girls would have run fast enough to get to the kitchen before Delilah noticed them and be careful not to touch any toys that might make noise. The sisters looked at each other and nodded before sprinting at top speed.
What happens?
