You couldn't believe what your eyes were seeing. The old saying was that seeing is believing but you just couldn't. Worse yet is that you knew exactly who this girl was. The clothes were different, and the eyepatch was new, but you recognized those ruby red eyes and that long dark hair anywhere.
"M-Mirai?" You actually managed to stutter out. It really was her. You hadn't seen her around in a minute. Where had she been? She just up and vanished out of the blue.
"So, the cat doesn't have your tongue." She continued to tease before turning much more serious and venomous. "And you actually remembered my name."
This was not good. It went without saying that Mirai did not like you. You didn't want to admit it but you kind of used to be a real jerk. You were a member of the popular crowd and that meant anyone didn't fit the bill or had the potential had to be put in their place even if they didn't deserve it.
Mirai was such a victim. She was always the shortest in the room, the flattest among the crowd, and a crybaby to boot. These were things people latched onto and attacked the girl for. Not physically most of the time but verbally. She was an easy target and other people lower on the totem pole went after her too if it meant saving their own skin.
You were no different. You were so desperate at the time to keep your status at the top and not become a victim that you went at her too. Unlike the others you really knew how to stick it to her. Her height and lack of a bust were her greatest weaknesses and you targeted them with the precision of a hitman.
More than once you left her in tears and did so with a laugh just so you could continue to fit in. On the outside it looked like you were having fun but, on the inside, you hated yourself for it. Mirai might have been a crybaby, but you were a coward.
You didn't actually hate the girl. To be honest you mostly just felt bad for her always being everybody's punching bag. The very last day you saw her was the straw that broke the camel's back for you. You were especially nasty and took it too far. She ran off crying after saying something that shook you to the core.
You felt disgusting but more than that you felt disgusted at everyone who was still laughing at her despite what she said. It was vile and it took finally breaking her for you to realize that you really were just an asshole. Popularity and shallow acceptance weren't worth it if you made people feel the way you made her feel.
After that day you cut yourself off from the popular crowd and promised yourself you would apologize to Mirai and make it up to her, somehow. Only, she never showed up for school. She continued to not show up and it made the guilt in your gut grow. She just disappeared and you never got the chance to say you were sorry.
Now your past had come back to haunt you and in a very big way. To think she would come back like this and finally be the tallest person in the room. It was a dumb joke, but it momentarily helped lessened your fear. No doubt she had broken into your house and done this to you, but how?
"It's been a long time Y/N." The finally large and in charge spoke as she crossed her arms. The way she was glaring at you send shivers down your spine and made you wonder if how you felt now was how she did back then.
"Y-Yeah, it has, hasn't it?" You stuttered out. You bit your lip as you wondered what you were going to say next. What could you say to a person you tormented without mercy? Sorry wasn't going to be enough and you felt very uncomfortable right now. "Uh... how have you been? Y-You look good."
Her hair looked to be freshly brushed, her eyepatch was shiny, her pink tank-top looked to be freshly ironed as well as her short-shorts, and her white socks and pink sneakers looked like they were brand spanking new.
"Do I? As I recollect you said I looked like a flat-chested dwarf!" She seethed. You winced; you did say that. You threw so many insults at her left right and center that it was hard to remember them all. "Or how about that time you called me president of the itty-bitty titty committee! Do you remember that!"
You did and you also remembered that a nearby teacher actually giggled when they heard you say it. "Mirai... I'm, I'm sorry I hurt you back then."
That appeared to be the wrong thing to say as she was now clenching her fists. "Sorry isn't good enough! I didn't come all the back here just to hear empty apologies! I'm here to finally get even, starting with you."
You started to take a few steps back. "Mirai, I swear, I am so sorry for everything I did to you."
"No, you're not." she said plainly before she took a step towards you. "But you're gonna be."
