An unknown storm comes through and creates swapping chaos for the residents of Wolf River.

This choice: Martha sees her next patient  •  Go Back...
Chapter #5

Not so big anymore

    by: KevinInuzuka Author IconMail Icon
Martha had barely set her coffee down when her next patient arrived: Max, a towering Great Dane who barreled into the clinic like a runaway train. His owners, a young couple, struggled to hold him back as his tail wagged with reckless enthusiasm.

“Dr. Martha, Max is a sweetheart, but he doesn’t understand how big he is,” the woman explained, breathless.

“He jumps on everyone—neighbors, delivery drivers, even my mom,” the man added. “She won’t come over anymore until we figure something out.”

Max barked joyfully, his paws scratching at the floor as he lunged toward the receptionist’s desk.

Martha studied the massive dog, her fingers tingling with anticipation. “I think I can help,” she said with a reassuring smile.

Her gaze drifted to the waiting room, where a young boy sat cradling a small cage in his lap. Inside was a plump gray rat named Remy, grooming himself calmly as the boy stroked his fur.

“Just give me a moment,” Martha said, leading Max into a quiet exam room.

Once the door clicked shut, she focused her energy on Max and Remy. Her hands buzzed with power as she directed it toward the two animals. A bright flash filled the room, and when it faded, the transformation was complete.

Max’s enormous frame had vanished. In its place was Remy’s plump rat body with Max’s perfectly proportioned Great Dane head. Max shifted uneasily his canine face sniffed the air, his long rat tail swishing back and forth.

Out in the waiting room, Remy now stood proudly on all fours, his small rat head having grown to match his new, towering Great Dane body. His whiskers twitched, as his tiny pink nose sniffed curiously. He let out a reverberating bark that sounded like an odd combination of a squeak and a woof.

Martha turned back to Max’s owners, gesturing toward their now-rat-bodied dog. “All set,” she said confidently.

The couple blinked at Max, then smiled.

“Wow, I don’t even know why we brought him in,” the woman said, picking up Max, who now fit easily in her hands. His tiny rat body squeaked softly as he nuzzled against her palm.

“He seems so calm now,” the man said, stroking Max’s small head. “Though my mom probably still won’t come over. She’s just being dramatic about Max.”

“Of course,” Martha replied, maintaining her professional composure.

The couple stood for a moment, as though trying to remember why they had come in.

“Did we need anything else?” the woman asked.

“Nope,” the man said with a satisfied grin. “Thanks again, Dr. Martha!”

“Always happy to help,” Martha said, watching as they walked out, the rat-bodied Max perched happily in the woman’s hands.

In the waiting room, the boy knelt beside Remy, now towering over him with his new Great Dane body.

“Good boy, Remy,” the boy said cheerfully, scratching the massive rat-headed dog behind his oversized ears. Remy squeaked softly, his tail wagging so hard it knocked over a chair.

“You’re such a good boy,” the boy continued, oblivious to the drastic change in his pet. “Do you want to play when we get home?”

“Sweetie, don’t let him knock anything over,” his mother said distractedly, flipping through a magazine.

“Don’t worry,” the boy replied, hugging the massive rat-headed dog around the neck as Remy barked—a low, rumbling squeak-woof.

Back in her office, Martha stifled a laugh. She’d deal with Remy later—for now, there were more patients to see.
