Chapter #4

The Doctor

    by: BeeJay Author IconMail Icon
Early that afternoon, I was at the clinic, seeing my doctor. "Good afternoon, John," he said. "What brings you in today?"

"Well, I didn't have to shave this morning," I replied, "and all the hair on my chest has fallen out. Plus, my voice is getting higher."

"I couldn't think of any reason for it," Mom added, "so I brought him in."

"Hm. Well, I've never seen anything like that. Let's give you the once-over, then see what we can find out."

And so it began. The doctor started by checking out my heart and respiration; then, he took a blood sample, and had me pee in a cup. Then, I went back to the exam room, and waited.

Finally, the doctor came back. "I think we've found what's happening to you, John."

"Is it serious?" I asked.

"It's nothing like you're thinking, John; in fact, your life will actually be extended by a few years."

"What are you talking about?" Mom asked. "What's happening to John?"

"As you may know, our biological sex is dictated by chromosomes. XX means you're female; XY means you're male."

"What does that have to do with me?" I asked.

"Your chromosomes used to be XY; now, they're XX."

"XX? You... You mean... ?"

He nodded. "Chromosomally, John, you're now a girl. And your body is now changing to reflect this."

"How is that possible?" Mom asked.

"John has an unusual genetic condition called Orlando Syndrome. Girls with this condition turn into boys, and boys into girls."

"How did John get this thing?"

"There's a Dr. Ramsey, in Eagan, who has devoted her career to the study of Orlando Syndrome. She can tell you more about it than I can. I'll schedule an appointment with her for you."

And so that was it. Now, I had to tell the rest of my family about this. I wasn't ready to talk to my friends just yet. At the moment, I couldn't imagine ever being ready for that.
