As the morning went on, I found that my nose kept telling me more and more. I could tell where the orderly was less than diligent with cleaning. I could tell that Dad really needed a shower, so I didn't mind when Mom sent him home for a bit.
And then I started hearing things. I don't mean I heard voices that weren't really there; I mean I heard voices from outside the room, even down by the desk. In particular, I heard the orderly from this morning, talking to one of the nurses. "So judgmental," he said. "I have a splash of tequila in my coffee this morning, and she acts like I did something wrong."
When he brought me my lunch, he asked me, "How are we feeling today?"
"Feeling pretty good, considering," I replied. "But don't tell people you had a splash of tequila in your coffee; you didn't have coffee."
I could smell him sweating as he left the room.

As I watched some daytime TV, my eyes went blurry. Thinking that maybe I needed a nap, I took off my glasses. The moment I did, everything snapped back into focus. What in the world? I thought. Whoever heard of bad eyesight getting better in a day?
Dr. Stone came back. "Let's have a look at how your wounds are doing," he said. "Now, it's not going to be pretty; but it will get better with time. Of course, you will have some interesting scars to tell your significant other about."
Forewarned about how it would look, I closed my eyes as the doctor removed my bandages.
"That's interesting."
It was his tone more than anything that made me curious. I opened my eyes a crack and looked. And my eyes went wide.
Despite the fact that I had been bitten just last night, the wound had healed greatly. In fact, it looked like I could have the stitches out anytime I wanted.
"Remarkable," the doctor said.
"What does it mean, Doctor?" Mom asked.
"I've never seen anything like it," he replied. "Under the circumstances, I'd say your daughter could be discharged tomorrow."
He took out the stitches, then left Mom to surprise Dad with the news.
