Unexpected Openings in the Band - Pt. 2

The four of you made painfully awkward smalltalk as you waited for your Tiny Travels RC. It was without a doubt, the longest ten minutes of your life. And you'd spent literal months bonded to various parts of your friends' and family's bodies before where seconds had felt like eternities. When your transport finally arrived, the Campbell-Steins walked you out, Sydney holding you in her hand and Dodger holding Rosa in hers. It was only when the RC turned a corner and you were out of sight of your three friends that you let out a sigh of relief.

*****

Mari didn't arrive home until late that night, but you couldn't sleep a wink until you told her what had taken place today. She'd seemed about to fall asleep within seconds of walking in the door, but when you both retired to the privacy of your bedroom, a minute into your story was all it took to make her wide awake.

"They... want us... in the polycule?"

You were relieved Mari was as dumbfounded as you'd been.

"I thought the same thing, but not quite. They want to give us a test to see if we have sexual chemistry, at which point we'd continue on a trial basis."

Mari blinked. "What happens after the trial basis?"

"I... truly don't know," you said, laughing and shaking your head in disbelief. "I guess we get a lifetime membership?" you chuckled.

Mari's eyes widened.

"I know, right?" you chuckled. "Anyway, they told me all one of us has to do is the say the word and they'll drop it."

"Uh... huh," Mari said slowly. "And... did you... say the word?"

"You kidding me?" you asked, bursting out laughing. You were shocked she even had to ask. Obviously, it was way too awkward to do that on your own. "I told them I had to run it by you and I ran straight home."

"And... you've been waiting to tell me ever since?" Mari asked.

"Well... yeah," you said awkwardly. "I mean... wouldn't you do the same in my position?"

"I..."

Mari paused. She looked totally at a loss, like she was trying to wrap her head around a million things at once. You could sympathize with her. Just earlier it had been you who'd been flabbergasted by your friends' proposal.

"I know it's a lot to take in," you said sympathetically. "I mean, I didn't see it coming at all. It's flattering in a way, but... I'm sorry, it was stupid of me to bring this up right now. You wanted to sleep, you had that big meeting all day and you need time to decompress and what do I do? Tell you some crazy story. It really could've waited until tomorrow morning. I'm sorry, Mari."

"No, no, it's... it's fine," Mari said. "Like you said though, it's... a lot to take in. I'll have a better response tomorrow when I have a clear head."

"Love you, beautiful," you said, patting her hand, affectionately.

She smiled. "Love you too, stud," she said and leaned down to give you a kiss, enveloping your head tenderly in her pillowy lips.

And with that Mari turned out the lights so the two of you could fall into a peaceful slumber. Little did you know, while sleep came easily and immediately for you, it took a while for Mari to fall asleep. For the longest time, she lay awake, thinking about all you told her.

*****

"Dinner at the Campbell-Steins tonight?" you repeated, surprised at the news.

"Mmhmm," Mari nodded, smiling pleasantly. "I talked with them this morning, got everything straightened out, we'll be having dinner with them tonight."

You let out a sigh of relief. Immediately it felt like a humungous weight was lifted off your chest. "I can't tell you how relieved I am," you said. "I was so worried this was going to be awkward, but... you just solved everything didn't you? You're amazing, you know that? I'm the luckiest man in the world to have you."

Another embrace of your beautiful wife's pillowy lips. Her lips lifted off you but remained just above you as she purred, "Damn right you are."

That night, what happens when you arrive at the home of the Campbell-Steins?

1) Mari had misinterpreted your talk and believes you're interested in taking Dodger, Sydney and Rosa up on their offer. Being open to trying something new, Mari told the three you were both onboard. Dodger and Sydney shared their love of crushing and other kinks with Mari and gave her a safe word to pass along to you. Unfortunately, your wife's dreadful memory strikes again and she forgot to ever tell you what it was.

2) Mari had realized your discomfort and politely shut down talks of experimentation. It's a perfectly normal dinner with your friends to show there's no hard feelings! But when has any get together with you ever been perfectly normal, really?
