It was shaping up to be a good day of business. Carla was getting orders out, nobody caused any trouble Chucks food was surprisingly edible today. But just as Esther was ringing up Donna for that pie Theo burst out of the bathroom just as fast as he’d gone in. “Is this some kinda joke, Es?”
“Is what some kind of huh?” The seasoned waitress gave him a look “what are you on about?”
Theo looked at her like she was pissing on his shoes and telling her it was raining “I’m talking about the weird renovations. When’d you even have time to do all this?”
“What renno?” Esther finally stepped out from behind the counter, making hew way to whatever Theo was going on about. “Nothing round here’s been renovated in 15… years…” Esther was shut up as soon as she got a look at the inside of the restroom.
Unlike how it’d always been the bathroom was now a lot cleaner, more comfortable and almost disturbingly child friendly. The walls were all of a sudden covered in a mural of smiley little cartoon desert critters. There was a big pristine sink with detailed illustrated hand washing instructions for small children, and the baby changing table had gone from a flimsy fold out plastic table transients did drugs off of to a massive fully stocked sturdy bench that looked like it could hold the combined weight her and Ted and maybe more. On top of all that and the smell of baby powder and daisies the pièce de résistance was the complete replacement of the toilet. The pipes were gone and the tile was smooth as if there’d never been a toilet at Maude’s Spoon to begin with. In its place sat an adult sized children's training potty chair.
“What the hell!?!” Esther stumbled back in shock. It was strange, now that one of them had been flagrantly pointed out and reacted to more things that didn’t make sense began to crop up. Were they there before and just now being noticed or were they suddenly now popping into reality. Either way, what was noticed first?
