The city was obviously proving to be the destination of choice for any number of refugees. As Dauphin forced her way through the unwashed crowds bustling through the shanty town that had been set up in the space between the main wall and the city proper, she realised why the guards had been so reluctant to let her in. As it was, should the city be attacked the defenders would lose the killing zone they would have had when the attackers broke the walls, and the refugees would lose their lives. It looked like she had one more thing to talk of with the settlement's ruler.
That was, if she ever reached the city's king. She was making slow progress through this sea of humanity's dregs. It would be so much easier if she could part the crowds before her, and she knew that she had the power within her. Of course, such a vulgar use of her abilities would not be without cost.
Then again, she really would like to get to the town sometime in this week.
