“Oh great,” said Terry, as the elevator’s ‘out of service’ light continued to glow redly at them. “We’ll have to use the stairs. I hate stairs. They should just replace the elevator - or move our dorm to the ground floor.” He waddled off towards the staircase. “I’ll go first, that way I won’t fall on anyone.”
Percy and Matt followed in his wake. Matt was fascinated to watch the two very fat boys waddling along - each of their bodies bounced and rippled in different ways, with Percy’s gut sloshing from side to side, while Terry’s fat butt seemed to bounced up and down more. As they passed, the old wooden floors creaked under their heavy footsteps. Matt wondered just how many other guys here weighed 500 pounds or more. He’d never met anyone so big before coming, and here were a pair of healthy, happy guys not much older than he who were absolutely enormous. He wondered if he’d be that big by the time he graduated.
The three boys rambled down the stairs slowly, and in the hallway were joined by many other boys on their way to lunch. Matt had never seen so many fat guys in his life - and only the youngest seemed to be much smaller than he was. As he entered the cafeteria, Matt grabbed a tray and followed along behind Percy, who with Terry headed straight to a counter marked ‘Hot dishes’. Over to the left he saw a counter marked ‘Fast food’, and a very tubby boy a bit younger than he was getting a pile of hamburgers. There were also counters of various marked ‘Salad’, ‘Sandwiches’, ‘Soup’, ‘Bread’, and ‘Desserts’, and a collection of drink dispensers with milk, pop, and juices. A large ice-cream freezer sat at one end. Percy asked the server for Hungarian goulash, and was given a bowl the size of a gallon ice cream tub. Matt looked at the counter and asked for the roast beef.
“How much, dear?” asked the large woman behind the counter.
“A lot,” said Matt, suddenly feeling very hungry. The server passed him a huge plate mounded high with sliced beef, roast potatoes, and glazed vegetables. “Are you new?” she asked.
“Yes,” replied Matt.
“Well, if you want any more, just come back,” she said. “Have a good lunch!”
Matt looked at the enormous mound of food on his tray, and wondered if he could eat it all. It looked like three or four days supper, not one lunch. He noticed other, bigger guys getting even bigger servings - some of them on platters. He got himself an enormous glass of milk and headed out into the cafeteria seating, where he noticed Percy waving to him. As he got closer he saw that one group of tables had “B” painted on their tops, and on the backs of the chairs. Percy was seated at the end of one table. Matt sat near him.
“These are the tables for B dorm,” Percy told him between mouthfuls. “You should always eat at your house tables. Meet Jeremy, Tod, James, Jerzy, Karl, Joey, and Hiro. Over there are Paul, Brad, Randy, Rob, Raul, Rico, Leonard, and Brian. There are more coming. Guys, this is Matt, and its his first day. He’ll be in room 15.”
“Welcome Matt,” said several of them in chorus. Matt looked around the table, and had the uncomfortable feeling that, aside from Hiro, he was the smallest guy at the table - and Hiro looked younger than him. Joey, he noticed, was the tubby boy he’d seen getting a heap of hamburgers at the fast food counter - his gut looked even bigger seated, and Matt thought he must be over 300 pounds. Karl was blond, not tall but big - 500, maybe 600 pounds, though not as big as Percy, Matt thought.
Looking at the heaping mounds of food on their trays, he thought to himself, ‘I’m going to have to eat a lot more to keep up with these guys.’ As he scooped up some mashed potatoes, he noticed how intently the other guys at the table were eating - no looking up and around, no joking, just the steady motion of fork or spoon delivering food to their mouths. Some of them had spoons and forks much bigger than the standard cafeteria ones he was holding - he wondered if they were personal, or if there was a special rack of them somewhere.
He worked his way steadily through the heaping plateful - the food was delicious, and when he got to the end, he wished he’s grabbed some bread to sop up the gravy. He sat, happy to have finished, when he realised that he didn’t feel full yet - he saw other guys going back for seconds, or for a burger or three, or heading straight to the dessert section. In fact, as he sat, he felt hungry. Matt decides to:
