Chapter #5Grey Discovery by: Unknown You carefully watch your footing as you safely slide your way across the slick metal grate, a limp beginning to show itself in your stuttering stride. Oily film aside, the black, soiled balance beam is a breeze to cross, and soon enough you stumble onto the coarse, warm earth of a roadway. You gamble along for several more steps before receding deeper into the shadow of the curb.
Collapsing against the cool, grey wall, you fling more residue from your hands before placing your head between them, whispering to yourself obvious inquiries, "Where am I? How did I get here? What is going on? I don't understand." You look out across the daunting dark expanse, and the whole world seems to end before it even crosses the street, blurred behind a wall of waving heat distortion. You turn your neck, ouch, you turn your upper body around to look upward.
"Looks like I've got to go up," you convince yourself as you get to your feet. "People don't wait in the road." You place one hand to the rough surface, tugging at its first protruding hold. "The road is where death waits." You throw your other arm up, grabbing tight to another bump of stone, then one by one your limbs lift and firmly plant themselves. Pain seems to dissolve as you focus your thoughts upwards, acting only to scale into the bright unknown.
"Just a few more," you reach up, a soreness suddenly pouring through your arm. Admittedly, climbing never was your strongest of talents, a weakness which can only magnify itself in a situation like this. Still, you continue, your shoes crumbling bits of concrete from beneath you, all but totally eliminating the ladder you ascended by. With a final pull, your eyes meet with direct sunlight, blinding but rewarding, and you throw your exhausted body onto a level plain once again.
Breathing heavily, muscles aching, you almost faint, to be doomed like so many earthworms, but it is that very thought that forces you to awake in dazed hope. "Can't give up now! I must keep," you stand only to fall forward, "keep going." You slowly pivot on your unsteady heels and discover where you are. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
