The note of course is found 1st thing in the morning. Princesses, even young hoydens who should have had a strap taken to them years ago [in the opinion of everybody except their indulgent parents] and who run all over the place, still have servants who oversee them constantly, and in the case of one maid, wakes them. Anna's shriek of alarm is hardly extreme, but she sets several records in reaching the royal couple, forcing her way past several guards and officials she had been terrified of in the past.
As she thrusts the note into the Queen's hands, she finally has time to recall what can happen to the bearer of bad tidings, and to wonder if it would not have been wiser to get somebody else to deliver the news, but it is too late now. She has done her duty and now she can't escape the "reward".
For the moment, it is not forthcoming. The Queen reads her daughter's note [as the illiterate maid wonders what it says] and then hands it to the King, while saying "I shall never forgive you for this."
