Small town living

The universe, it seems, is made up of long shots and coincidences. We see through out history that if A hadn't been present/sick/ambitious, or whatever, B couldn't have done what he had done. Unlikely events become likely through a strange chain of events.
Bob and Hailey's company had built their small group of labs out in the middle of nowhere. The closest town was a small dot in the road named Gold Fountain, Missouri, population 452. So when the containment field at the plant blew, there was a small ring just outside the window of destruction where everything wasn't destroyed, but it wasn't untouched either. The lab and its occupants were vaporized instantly, as was pretty much everything in a mile radius. Outside of a mile and an eighth radius, everything was untouched. But in that small little area in between, everything got shrunk. People were shrunk down to roughly six inches. Plants, buildings and everything else got shrunk down proportionately. Fortunately for the town of Gold Fountain, it was outside the circle of destruction. Unfortunately for the town, it wasn't outside the circle of shrinking.
Fortunately for the town's residents, there had been some unusual power fluctuations earlier (a precursor of the containment field failing), unusual enough for the lab to call the town's mayor and tell him it would be a good idea to evacuate. Unfortunately for the townspeople, their evacuation route went through the circle of destruction. So we have a high tech lab and at least 500 people destroyed without a trace. And no one outside of the small area knew what had happened, or would discover what would happen for sometime to come.
And now comes a really wild coincidence. A photo shoot was scheduled in the scenic state park just outside of Gold Fountain. The models of the shoot arrived first in their individual cars, while the photographer was schedule to get there within a couple of hours. It was this two hour difference that let the photographer go untouched, while the models driving into town got shrunk down to six inches. These particular models were posing for...
