The bear opened the door. A young Hispanic boy, no more than sixteen or seventeen, strolled into the house dripping water onto the floor. The girls were struck at once by his appearance; for starters, he was mind-bogglingly gorgeous. Robyn wasn't sure that such a face could even be human. But his eyes were a brilliant sapphire blue that, despite his aggrivated expression, was full of despair. That blue wasn't a normal eye color, of that Robyn was sure. He was tall and lean, but managed to fill out his clothes wonderfully.
Clay walked in and took off his coat. "Brrr!"
"I'm sorry, who are you?" Eliza asked.
"I'm Clay Hall." He put his coat on the rack by the door.
"Why are you here?" Robyn asked.
"To help keep you safe." He said it as a matter of fact, with no particular emotion at all. Eliza frowned and asked, "From what?"
Clay shook his head. "I'm sorry. I'd rather wait until the others get here to explain that."
"What others?" Robyn asked.
But Eliza moved forward to a spot on the floor right in front of him. "Look, I'm sure you're a great person, but I don't see how a teenage boy is going to protect us from anything. I'm sorry."
But he didn't seem bothered by it. A smug smile crept over his face. He'd identified a challenge. Somehow the look made him more attractive.
"Oh, you don't, do you?"
Eliza felt a lump in her throat. "No."
Clay nodded. He turned to the bear. Suddenly, his hands shot out, took the bear, and hoisted him over his head.
"HEY!!! We talked about this!" the bear griped.
Robyn smiled. "Okay, put him down. You're about to rip your shirt."
"What? No, I'm--oh, wait." He noticed how tight the fabric was around his arms. He put the bear back down gingerly. "Sorry, ol' boy. She made me."
Eliza gasped. "No, I did not!
Clay laughed. "I'm kidding."
The door flew into the living room. A large bald man stepped in wielding a metal rod. He stepped toward the girls.
"Oh, no you don't!" The bear ran at him. A roar rose from his throat. The bald man cracked him in the skull and stepped aside as he ran into the wall and fell to the floor. He looked at Clay and smiled.
"You think you can take me, little boy?" He laughed heartily. "I tell you what. I'll even give you the stick."
He tossed Clay the rod. Clay considered it for a moment and snapped it like a brittle twig.
"Nah. Don't need it." He swung with his right fist. The bald man's shirt bunched into a ball and moved forward, and he was pulled right into Clay's line of fire. The popping sound was incredible. The bald man was thrown back into the doorway. Several teeth fell out of his mouth.
Robyn's eyes were wide. "Nice work."
"Thank you, thank you." He wiped his hands on his jeans and stepped over to the bear. "Alright, let's get to the chair, Buddy."
He pulled him up by the arm and steadied him when he was on his feet. "Are you alright?"
"I'll have a knot on my head in the morning. Other than that, I'll be alright. Are you alright?"
Clay gave him a look. "Oh, give me some credit, Buddy, I've had more dangerous people come at me that this joker."
The wind blew in as Eliza tried to close the door. Clay waved at it and it swung closed, wind or no wind.
"You're telekinetic too?!" Robyn asked.
Clay looked at her and smiled. "I'm all kinds of things."
