Bryan scanned the shadowed area under the table. Crumbs from meals of previous patrons were scattered across the floor, like boulders to the tiny man. Where the booth and wall met his eyes could discern the movement of what was probably a scavenging ant.
He shuddered and started walking briskly in the opposite direction. As he neared the edge of the table’s shadow he became more aware of the noises of the active restaurant. His table was around a corner, in the back. Bryan treasured his privacy, and this had become his favorite spot. It also was the reason no one had noticed his “little” problem.
Now the clangs and sizzles from the kitchen mixed with the thundering voices of hungry customers. Stopping, he allowed the noise to wash over him. He had to be proactive and get help quickly, if he wanted to return to normal. With a deep breath he strode out from under the table.
SMACK! *SQUEAL* A large black shoe missed him by inches as it marched by. “Oh!” Bryan cried out as he scrambled back under the table. Corby, unaware of the close call, returned to the kitchen holding a tray of dirty dishes. Bryan breathed heavily due to the close encounter. He needed to be more careful, he wasn’t used to dealing with people at this size. Marching out into the open simply wasn’t an option.
After taking another minute to calm down somewhat, Bryan forced himself to venture out again. This time he stayed against the sheer cliff formed by the towering booths, all of which were luckily unoccupied.
A few more customers had come in to the restaurant, although it was still fairly empty. Bryan noted this and knew that less people meant less giants to worry about. Over the din of regular noise a loud laugh rang out. Bryan’s face brightened when he heard it. Tommy had arrived at the restaurant a few minutes after he had and was just across the room. That thought dampened his mood. Tommy was across this massive room.
Bryan needed Tommy’s help, there was no doubt. And he would eventually get to the teenager’s table if he stuck to the walls. But Bryan was no fool and knew if he went as the crow flies across the room, he would get there much faster… of course with a much higher risk…
