A slow start, but it really picks up in terms of quality writing.
Some vaguely awkward phrasing aside, the characters are endearing and interesting enough to keep me reading for the whole 2235 words.
I did wonder though, why they couldn't wait a day til after the game. I'm hoping this is a real bit of the mum's character showing through (not always being the greatest, most thoughtful mum in the world) and not just a plot device to give reason for tension between family members.
