His Cologne [E] I preferred the smell of my affair's cologne to my boyfriend's laundry. |
My favorite thing about this poem is the structure, with the end of one line becoming the beginning of the next; it provides a beautiful sense of continuity that kept me hooked and wanting more all the way through to the final line. I noticed that the first line of couplets three through six made a "because" statement, once again creating continuity and a pattern that pulled me into a wonderful rhythm. The first two couplets, the last two, and then the closing line follow a similar pattern, making "that" statements instead, creating the same continuity through another rhythm. The poem is symmetrical and yet varied through these two patterns, maintaining the poem's momentum without sacrificing its gentleness. I felt sweetly lulled and relaxed throughout the reading, and yet my mind never wandered from the poem; you had my full attention all the way through, and I loved every moment of it. I think the structure and symmetry of the poem would make it lovely to read aloud, as well. I also love the title, which is above all intriguing, brought a particular scent of cologne to my mind, which in turn already set me up to feel quiet and relaxed. I always try to identify something I can give as a suggestion to explore, but I've not been successful at coming up with an idea that I feel would truly add something meaningful to this poem. It's a lovely piece that I find romantic and sweet, and it made me feel precisely what I'd hoped and more. I expect to come back to reread it again and again because I enjoyed it so much, both technically and emotionally. I think you've done wonderful work here, and I'll be looking forward to what you choose to share with us in the future. Best wishes, Lynn My review has been submitted for consideration in "Good Deeds Get CASH!" .
