Hi Aaron Zhu Author Icon

It is my pleasure to read your story, "By Shadows Unseen" and give you a review. I found your story in this week's horror/scary newsletter. Welcome, Aaron, to WDC!

*Sun*Reader's Reaction:
Seeing shadows that aren't suppose to be can be daunting. This is what happened to Brent, the main character. He and his five friends each held the same philosophy - "Humanity is quickly devolving, and we must preserve what nobility remains." I'm not so sure this belief proved fruitful when he began seeing things that his friends could not see. This became a scary experience for him, and began to alienate his four friends.

*People* Characters/Dialog: The characters were well defined, showing human nature at its worst. When a friend's in trouble, you try and help him, not just desert him as they did. Each had their own selfish reasons on doing so.

The dialog was seemed real enough, showing how each character thought.

*Tree2* Emotion/Mood/Atmosphere: The emotion showed unawareness, confusion, even anger when finding out Brent was not listening to the conversation.

The mood gradually turned from friendliness to exhibiting strong animosity over Brent's distracting shadow who he thought he saw.

The atmosphere became judgmental, and whimsical - odd. Great descriptions of background, setting, and events.

*Lightning2* Plot & Pace: The plot - "Sometimes there are things only we can see."

The pace is set just right, showing what is going on at the Miltonsford Manor.

*Burstv*Structure - setting & Imagery: The narrative structure refers to dramatic action revolving around the plot, determining the key conflicts, main characters, setting, and events.

*Rain* Favorite Lines: "Miltonsford Manor had been the talk of the nearby village for some time now, as it became the victim of awry observations and idle gossipers. One glance at its moss-grown fences and archaic sprawls of stone would’ve prompted the paranoid to imagine a place of nothing but despair – the lair of a villain in a child’s cartoon, or the dungeon of some barbarian from ages past."

*Idea* Overall Impression/Conclusion: This is a great opening paragraph! It caught my attention immediately, wanting to read on.

The conclusion - I hoped it wouldn't end that way, but I guess it was inevitable.
