Generally, the first time I come across someone I've yet to review, I comb through their Portfolio looking first for essays, then short stories. I love reading essays, and was able to satisfy two urges: to read and review an essay. You state you wrote your essay for a creative writing course. It doesn't really matter, but I am curious: was it for a high school or a college course? I assume from your title it was the latter. I didn't know I was a baby boomer when I was in high school. I took an accelerated creative writing course--I needed that course to actually fulfill all the requirements to graduate. (Much longer story there.) But I discovered a lifelong interest in essays. As you probably know, but for the sake of anyone else reading this review, there are four main types of essays--argumentative, expository, narrative, and descriptive. Yours falls in the narrative form though it also fits in descriptive. You paint a vivid picture of your childhood, a time in which the rest of us boomers can certainly identify. I believe your title is too vague. I mean you should be more specific--your title really covers a huge area, and didn't offer much to pinpoint your actual topic. I think your title is a great one for a series of essays covering those years. Your essay fulfilled its requirement: that of evoking certain memories in the person reading it. Your words took me back to much simpler times, times that I lament passing. As I mentioned, memoires signifies a much broader topic. I saw no other essays visible in your folder. I hope you consider adding more. I'll be 70 this August and am engaged in writing a series of memoire essay for my kids (four of them) and grand-kids (eight). My problem has been too many memories to decide which to write. Your offering has added several more topics to my list. Thanks ... and I mean thanks! Technical Considerations.I found nothing of consequence to be listed in this section. Well written essay. Favorite Part. I remember our neighborhood having apple, cherry, peach and orange trees. We would pick fruit for the owners for a small stipend and spend it exactly as you described. However, If I wanted the company of a friend or young lady, I needed to mow two lawns. My Rating. 4.5. Thank you for sharing your offering.
