The Beasts that Lurk [13+] A retelling of Hansel and Gretel. Winner of the 12-23-22 Writer's Cramp. |
HAPPY WDC ACCOUNT ANNIVERSARY FROM "Anniversary Reviews" First Impressions: I love retellings of old myths and fairytales, and this one was no exception. You did a great job making the readers feel for the evil witch who was actually neither a witch nor all that evil in this tale. Well, until the end, but I couldn’t say that I blamed her. She just tried to get by after her husband died and her eyesight faded. She had a goat and a few chickens that provided her with milk and eggs, and she actually liked children. All except two, who were the real evil characters in this tale. Their cruelty actually made me quite angry as I was reading - a sign of a good story. It was too much to hope that they would leave her alone - for some reason, they had the urge to torment the old woman, and despite her disability, she still had a few tricks up her sleeve. The readers are obviously familiar with the old tale so the fate of the children in the end wasn’t a surprise, but I liked how you arrived at the conclusion. Suggestions: I only noticed a couple of errors, two sentence where there seemed to be a word missing: she enjoyed listening their laughter “listening to their laughter” where often would be “where there often would be”, maybe? Final Thoughts: The ending was quite savage, but it seemed fitting. After all, the woman started off being all caring and nice, offering freshly baked pastry to children and never wanting to hurt an animal, and those nasty kids tried to ruin it for her. I loved the way the goat played a part in Gretel’s demise, like it knew the woman was in trouble and tried to help. A great story, I enjoyed it a lot! My review has been submitted for consideration in "Good Deeds Get CASH!" .
