Flash Fiction Contest--300 words or less [E] Contest runs from April 5, 2009 through Noon on April 18, 2009. |
This is a "Game of Thrones" review! Hello, Overall Impression: I like the idea of the flash fiction contest and I think your prompts are interesting. Title and Description: I like what you've done here. The title clearly indicates the parameters of the contest while the description provides an exact timeline. Both are very helpful to WdC members and contest participants. I find a lot of people don't use the area to create the most enticing descriptions, but although is more practical, it works. Content: The page is to the point but also a bit stark. The forum was created before my time at WdC, so I'm not sure if it's a function of having fewer options at the time or a deliberate design choice. However, it is laid out logically and is easy to understand. With the generous timeline for a flash fiction piece, it's perfectly reasonable for you to expect proofreading and corrections before submission. Limiting entries to 20 would limit the amount of judging needed, which I know can be a problem depending on what's happening in our personal lives. I always hesistate to put hard limits on the numbers, though. However, if the number of entrants was overwhelming and the work was not solid, then it makes sense to me to limit it. The E rating as a stretch is tough, especially on WdC where E is a lot stricter than people realize. Even bumping it up to ASR might not be enough. 13+ would have certainly expanded the entry pool, but I see you were busy enough that it probably worked out fine. It's likely most of the entries were falling between ASR and 13+ anyway. Final Thoughts: This was a very generous offering with unique aspects, and I'm sure it provided a much-needed service for the community. Thank you for sharing your work with us!
