Edgar Allan Poe

"What is a poet? An unhappy person who conceals profound anguish in his heart but whose lips are so formed that as sighs and cries pass over them they sound like beautiful music."

Soren Kierkegaard

"A poet is a nightingale, who sits in darkness and sings to cheer its own solitude with sweet sounds."

Pandemic Poetry

Poetry By the Numbers 2.0 series is put on hold for Pandemic Poetry! Because a pandemic waits for no one, It just kinda takes over.

Let's talk about some fun quarantine poetics and my suggestion for a poetry form—my own invention-er well, twist on a current form.

It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

Love the sing-a-long in the balconies of Italy? I thought it was awesome, but let's SLAM it up a notch. Why not try a poetry slam while keeping your social distance? Neighbors too far away? Get together virtually! Don't forget to slam with friends and family, too!

Up in Smoke

Don't forget a poetry campfire.

What's a campfire? That where everyone takes turns writing. In this case, it's where everyone takes turns either writing a stanza or line or whatever is decided at the beginning of the campfire.

Catharsis

It's a stressful time. Writing is a way to release that stress.

Write what you feel, Write silly stuff. Write anything that allows you release.

An added benefit of reducing your stress? It improves your immune system!

COVID-KU

And the perfect poetry form: COVIDku! If you are familiar with spamku and scifaiku, then you'll know exactly what COVIDku is. If you don't then here's a quick summary: spamku is a haiku about Spam (usually the food, not the email) and scifaiku is haiku about something science fiction. Don't know what a haiku is? No worries, just follow the instructions below.

MUST HAVES

--line count: 3

--stanza count: 1 unless creating a chain

--topic: Related to the COVID-19 pandemic

--meter: syllabic – 5, 7, 5

--rhyme: none

COULD HAVES or WHAT IS THE POET’S CHOICE IN ALL THIS?

--theme

Stay safe, everyone!
