Letter from the editor

Hello! Where in the world are you? I live in a valley village in England. It's raining at the moment. My kittens are not pleased about this. They want to scamper around outside.

Our writing site is home to members from all around the world. It's something I love about our community, as it means that we get to communicate with and share our writing with people from a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds. I find it fascinating to learn about places I have not (yet) visited, and to read about traditions I have not heard of before. We may have an idea about life in other countries, but it's far better to learn from those who actually live there. Not in the least because otherwise we might get stuck on stereotypes. For example, I grew up in the Netherlands and you'd be surprised how many people, upon hearing that, have a vision of a nation of windmills, clogs and tulips. Sure, some windmills remaining standing, and tulips are still grown. I've never met anyone who wears clogs, however. They still get made, but they tend to be sold to tourists. Things have changed somewhat since that – admittedly quite sweet – notion of what it is to be Dutch.

Likewise, I have not met a single person wearing a bowler hat in all of my years in the UK. I don't believe I've ever heard anyone say “blimey”. And on my visits to France, Frenchmen completely failed to cycle down the road with a string of onions around their neck. They didn't even wear a beret! Nor did the Americans I've met go around in Hawaiian shirts and shorts, which is just as well because, as I mentioned, there's the rain. That much is true about life here. It rains a lot.

When I was a young lass I had pen pals in a few different countries. We're talking snail mail here; the Internet was not yet widely available. I loved exchanging letters. It was a lot of fun. The kind of instant, global communication we have now, though, is something I could have only dreamed of back then. I do still value physical letters and cards, but the Internet offers us (seemingly) endless opportunities to learn about the other and, importantly, from the other.

This especially matters in a time when we, as a global community, face some major problems. In order to look after our planet, for example, we have to work together. We have to reach out across seas, across oceans, across countries and continents to establish a healthy dialogue and build up trust. If we do that, I believe that we can accomplish great things. Most of us want to live in peace. Most of us want clean air, clean water, clean soil. We have enough resources to ensure that nobody goes hungry. And we can share science, and art, and all those dreams that make life fulfilling. That is how we create a brighter future for everyone.

That may sound idealistic, and perhaps it is. We have never been closer, though, have we? And the alternative is not that pretty. I think I speak for most of us when I say that the last few years have been far from perfect, and that if we do not work together nothing will get solved. I feel that, at the very least, it is worth a try.

Share your thoughts, then. Write your items. Create blog posts. Comment on other people's blogs. Join in on the newsfeed. Reach out.

We are here for you. *Smile*
