Adventure is about changing what the routine is. Action is not about the regular way. We talk about the time to get from home to school or work and back again, but we tell the story about the days when we have construction or we got cut off or the red light just wouldn't turn green (or it was endlessly blinking).
We write stories of adventures, but our lives are often mundane and boring. So many different things have changed with how we're going to go forward in the last six months, and I'm wondering where that next adventure will appear. Suddenly it all has felt like an adventure because it hasn't been the way we did things. The grocery store was one thing, with a mask, following the arrows down the aisles. But this week I talked to someone, because she held a rubber chicken. I didn't expect a weird rubber chicken. She ended up buying it, and I didn't know, until I spoke, that I knew her. She recognized my voice, I think, not my appearance. And she showed me her face and I knew her in an instant. We're martial arts buddies, and I hate that she might believe she's not badass.
So what adventure are you on now? Mine has to do with school and children's activities. I have a new job conditioning gymnasts and building gymnastics equipment, which I am very excited about. Sounds funny, huh? But sometimes, we choose to do things that are not at all what we think, not at all what we thought we needed.
I found out I need a push. I need to have that physical push to be happy. It doesn't matter as much what it is- at different times it's been BodyAttack, BodyCombat, PiYo, Krav Maga - I just know by now I need a challenge. And right now that's conditioning gymnasts. I came out grinning yesterday, after the third time that week. I am sore from a workout, sweating and seeing the difference in those kids. The first time, i had never heard a gymnast utter the words "I feel so chill" and it took longer to seep in that maybe that's exactly what they needed.
So what is it that we're needing that we don't know we need, and how are we going to find that when we get into our routine and stay there? Books push characters into something new, and we have that point of no return, where that character has bought into the journey and can't go back to living in the world that used to exist without that knowledge or that bit of life.

You surely had quite an adventure. I can imagine having to run my generator for 6 days. gas every 12 hours.
I'm glad it's over. Now trying to get the trees cleaned up everywhere. It could definitely be worse. |
