About This Newsletter

Contest & Activities Newsletter by Dawn

While writing to some can be a solitary activity, for many of us there is an obvious sense of community and that can come in handy when trying to make progress on projects. Some places exist here on WDC to help by providing a place for feedback and to give updates in order to show progress.

Letter from the editor

"Most goals people set are not achieved because they are not held accountable for them. When goals are made in private they tend to fall off because people stop being motivated, stop focusing and stop prioritizing." - Bola Onada Sokunbi, Goal Setting To Live Your Dreams

Writing is one of those activities that can be difficult to finish and easy to find distractions within. Many people say they want to write something, whether it's a short story, poetry or a lengthy novel. However, not as many are successful at getting the action done. That is part of why November became National Novel Writing Month, to provide encouragement to move beyond the talking, planning and worry of the horribleness of a first draft and to just write. Something else the movement has done with the challenge focusing on novels is that people have a place to make goals and be accountable for their results. It is something that I find useful year around, having a location to make writing specific goals and to report any progress.

I used to host a group that focused on that in particular for NaNoWriMo but also when on year around for anyone that wanted to keep making goals and working towards them. I'm resurrecting the group this year and hope to keep up with it despite business at work and having a side job. I don't get as much written now as I used to when I first became a moderator on this site and it's nice to have others to hold me accountable for what I want to get done. And my group isn't the only one. In fact, if you're looking for an option to have some accountability, here on WDC you have some good places and most of them use the same type of "item" in order to provide for different people here on the site.

Groups and Forums

Here it is the groups and forums where you can find ways to create accountability and give options for the existence of a progress report. There are smaller, more private groups available, some that span over a much larger space on the site, and even some spots that are general where discussions can still help in order to reach your writing goals. A couple of them are more specific to November, like my group and the official NaNoWriMo forum that isn't active yet but gets resurrected every year. Others include genre specific groups or just little niches where people have created a forum where you can get to know other writers and discuss your goals along with anything you have achieved during the specified time frame. And there is always the weekly goal posts managed by the creators of the site for some short term inspiration.

Wherever you decided to join and post, consider what you want to write. Make goals for yourself and don't forget to go back in order to let everyone know how you are doing. And don't be afraid to admit when something doesn't get accomplished. It's okay to fall a little short of a goal or to need an extension. Even so, having that option, having a place to give the report of progress and struggles, it is all part of what makes this a writing community.
