Letter from the editor

In a few days, NaNoWriMo starts. One of the best parts of writing season is the energy moving through all the people who have a novel in their brains. There are so many pieces of writing advice out there.

Remember the people who tell you to write every day? That may or may not work for you. We have our own ways of making things work. There are successful writers who don't write every single day, and there are others who make that part of what they do.

Write a story from the beginning to the end. Some stories don't fall out that way, or they need to be told in a different manner.

Write short stories to get accustomed to doing novels. Sometimes, I can tell you from experience, every short story feels like Chapter 3 in a novel.

My newest job is working as a conditioning coach in a gymnastics club. Form matters, repetition matters, and not everything you do looks like what it looks like in the competition. Using muscles you've built up, making all the things practiced easier.

Writing is a lot like that. Writing is what happens when you unleash your creativity with words. It might be a novel. It might be a short story. It might be poetry. It could even be personal essays. Every time you put pen to paper - or fingers to keyboard - you let the words out. You're using muscles even if you're trying something new, like naming your role playing characters and creating a backstory.

While NaNo is coming, don't be afraid to let the rules go. Some of those rules were only created to make us feel inferior. I am the write-every-day person, because it works for me and no other reason. I write novels because that's how the ideas come into my head, but sometimes I do other forms. And when it doesn't feel like it's coming out right, I try something else. How do you write? When? What? Let me know.
