Letter from the editor

Everyone's sense of humor is different. It is subjective. It is cultural. It is influenced by circumstances and even by a person's mood. So why bother to try to make people laugh?

Some of us like to make others laugh. We like to lighten the moment by saying or writing amusing things. Discovering what drives that need is not really our concern here, because let's face it, ain't nobody got time for that.

I am actually the last person on the site that should be writing on this subject, at least according to my husband. I will say something I think is hilarious and he doesn't laugh. He doesn't even crack a grin. I end up laughing at my own joke, all by myself.

I find this mildly annoying.

"That was funny! C'mon, admit it!" I say to him.

"Yeah, it was," he agrees, face serious.

"You know, most people actually laugh when they hear something funny."

"It was funny!" he replies, sounding more defensive than amused.

When I use him as a beta reader, I know I have hit a home run when I hear a teeny, tiny chuckle (sounding more like a nasal exhalation) and a declaration of, "That was good," as he hands my laptop back to me. Score!

Maybe I'm not being fair to my poor, beleaguered husband. He has been know to laugh at my jokes. He has done it at least three times that I know of. He does enjoy my stories. When I'm writing humor, though, I write what is funny to me, what makes me snicker, what tickles my funny bone. I'm not thinking about my future readers and what they may or may not find amusing (especially my husband). If it turns out that people find my writing funny, then I have been especially successful. My goal is someday write something so funny even my husband will laugh out loud. Do you think I can pull it off?

Does anyone know where I can get my hands on some nitrous oxide?
