Over the years of writing newsletters, I have, on occasion, celebrated the Newbies of the past year. That means, new members who hit the ground running by jumping in not and offering activities to other members here on the site. This year, I couldn't find anyone who joined in 2020 who would have a listing on the Activites or Contests page. Why is that? |

Where Are The Newbie Activities?
Writing.Com does a great job at helping newcomers to the site to get situated. If the newcomers are willing to read a few instructions and tinker about a little bit, they will quickly find their way around here. "Writing.Com 101" explains every aspect of the site and links to all helpful documents that are listed in other areas of the site.
Even by following all of the instructions in Writing.Com 101, Newbies (yes, I'm going to give them a proper noun) need the community to pull them in and show them some of the things to do beyond posting their writing here. Of course, we want them to write and post their writing. Since this is a peer to peer reviewing site, the next step is to get them to read & review others.
Inviting Newbies to take part in contests is a great way to get them to write more and also try out new things.
What about activities? Yes, invite Newbies to your activities, but not everyone understands the concept of a raffle, an auction, or other activity that isn't strictly about writing. If you're going to send a Newbie a raffle ticket, take the time to also communicate with them by email and explain what this is. In 2008, I received a ticket to "Season Tickets" . I didn't know what it was. I didn't know how it worked. I had no clue. I think it was gifted to me anonymously, so I couldn't even ask.
One thing that I've seen less of the past years are Newbies who not only jump into writing and reviewing, but those who offer activities to the community. Let me say this: There is absolutely no rule that anyone has to offer anything at all beyond their friendly interactions on the site. However, it is always really cool to meet people who plop in and are immediately comfortable and make the place an online home for the rest of us.
One great way to connect with a Newbie is to read and review their pieces. Depending on what you read, you might add a link to a group they should get connected with. Or a contest that they should enter. Or an activity that has something to do with their interests. Invite them to reply to the review and exchange emails until your Newbie takes off and starts fully using the site. You can find them here: https://www.writing.com/main/list_items/type/newbie

If you are a Newbie who joined in 2020 and you have created anything like a poll, a forum, a group, a raffle or auction. Or if you have any C-Notes you would like to promote, have a crossword we should attempt, want to know how smart we are with a quiz, or anything for the community that I didn't mention, let me know through the comment box below. I will include it in my next Contest & Activities Newsletter. |
