New or Boo Year?
Last year filled our lives with a pandemic, lockdowns, quarantines, illness, grief, and our lives turned inside out, to use a cliche. Oh, wait, today is still last year. I want to see this year in my rear view mirror NOW. I know many others feel the same way.
My writing didn't do well in 2020, either. First, I had Covid19 in March. Then I made a major move in less than a month. I moved from a house where I lived for 29 years. Imagine all the piles of stuff accumulated in that time and needing to have everything out in a short time. I survived both, I think, but my writing didn't.
Now, I face a new year. I have two novels partially written, both which show much promise, but they have been partially written for over two years. I face two roads in the woods of my writing life. Do I go the wide road and forget writing, or do I go the narrow one and get to work? Do I accept a new year or a boo year, crying over what might have been? How do I make 2021 productive year?
First, I will not make any resolutions but will set goals. Resolutions beg to be broken, but working toward a goal means I make progress even if I don't make the end. My goal for 2021 is to finish both in-process novels, maybe not have polished for submission, but finished.
Second, my daily goal is to write for at least fifteen minutes a day. I will choose a time and set the timer for fifteen minutes. If I don't want to stop when the timer rings, I will keep writing. If I can't continue, I will stop. However, my goal is to write every day at least fifteen minutes.
Third, I want to prepare and post at least two blog posts each month. I won't set a length, just the goal of posting twice a month, preferably every two weeks.
Fourth, I will continue to prepare my newsletters for Writing.Com. Often when I write to help and encourage other writers, enthusiasm for my own writing increases.
Finally, I will continue to give writing workshops that require me to prepare material in writing. Yes, I can talk forever about most topics, but if I write something to share with others, I am fine-tuning my writing.
I want to face a new year, new beginnings, good beginnings with my writing. I lived through a boo year this year, and I don't want another. |
