So tired!?
I'm so tired. Those that know me, know I don't moan about stuff. But, I'm tired! I bought a second home in FL and I'm going down to close the sale this week. So I've been packing. Mind you, I'm "only taking the necessary things". Those things, after living in a house 25 years, is a mighty pile. While I was only going to toss a few boxes in my truck, the pile will now barely fit in two trucks. Oh my.
So this will be a new adventure for this poor, tired editor. I'll keep you updated on the move. And whether I return back up north while it's still cold. I packed a few sweaters. And I'll be packing my computer. And my laptop. One should survive the trip, right? RIGHT?
While I still have the energy, let me throw down a little advice, since it's the New Year and all. Be organized - make the time to be organized. I thought I was a pretty organized person until I had to start sticking it all in boxes. Not so much. But!....the good news is, I'm pretty organized with my writing. And stuff doesn't blow away or get lost...uhm, well...sometimes they do! This is why we back up our work. Have you? Don't fib while you're nodding at the screen. Get some kind of storage and copy and paste. It takes just a minute and well worth the peace of mind.
I'll be hitting my 500th newsletter this month, I think that's a pretty awesome accomplishment! So hey, do me a favor and answer this month's question, I'll know you've read one or two of these issues and I'll feel the love. And if you have time, respond to all the issues you receive.
And as always, Write On!
This month's question: What do you do to back up your work? What advice can you give regarding organization?

| | Mafe Lodge (13+) Saying goodbye to a lost love is one of the hardest thing to you, yet it is liberating. #2239031 by Petal |
Excerpt: The aroma of her fruity perfume blended with the mist sailed into his lungs, reviving, energizing, and filling him with old hidden longings. To run his hands through her hair and hold her soft warm body in his arms.

Excerpt: “A journey to find love, the real stuff, the kind that shackles itself to you; that gets into your heart and makes it pump in strange ways; that's as unpredictable as a leaf navigating the wind; that stays with you day and night; that makes you do astounding things and at times the most dreadful of things just to keep it; that causes you to go blind and much, much more than that. A massively important dream that he had never dreamt before that he highly suspected would have him traveling from one end of the Earth to the other and even if necessary a little bit farther than that, metaphorically speaking of course, just to acquire it if it, this rarest of finds, can be located then captured at all.”
Excerpt: Jonathan immediately saw her from the distance. He was surprised. What was this young woman doing all alone on the road? It was getting dark, of all things; besides, it was an hour from the nearest town. He slowed down, and slowly came closer to where she was walking. He stretched his arm and opened the right window. Carefully, without trying to scare her, he said:
“Would you like a lift? It might rain again. It’s also becoming late, you know."
Excerpt: Jenna cut in smoothly, "What I was hoping to talk to you about, Nathan, is what happened at RealChix."
The smirk was back. "Oh, you mean the theft? The one that cost you your job? It couldn't have happened to a nicer Agricultural-Industrial Complex."
| | Lemuria (13+) A Man And His Nephew Go Looking For An Ancient Lost Civilization... #2197784 by Angus |
Excerpt: “How’s your ankle feeling, uncle Jake?” Chris asked.
Jacob tried to move his foot, but then thought better of it. He knew it was useless; the swelling around the ankle was only getting worse. It was either broken or severely sprained.
“It’s not too bad,” he lied, trying not to worry the kid. “If I just let it rest tonight, maybe in the morning it’ll be better and you can help me hobble down the mountain.”
Excerpt: I smiled again. “It’s very simple, dear. I’m your friendly neighbourhood psychopath. I believe they call me the Bennington Ripper. Terrible name, of course, so banal. Really must think up something more appropriate and send it to the press.”
Excerpt: “If you leave before sunrise, you get nothing.” The bespectacled man with the tiny hands and shiny head seemed to be recommending the choice, rather than issuing a warning. He wiped a worn handkerchief over his forehead, dabbing away the beads of perspiration forming there. “The will is very specific on that point.”

Excerpt: He looked back towards the darkened road and his spirits suddenly rose. Illuminated not too far ahead was a land-line phone booth, stark in the enfolding night that had blanketed the desert just an hour ago.
| | I Am the Storm (18+) Her forest is diseased, her memories are lost, and her companion is not what he seems. #2091150 by K Renée |
Excerpt: In her dreams, small voices cried out, axes cleaved, illness tingled in her lips and toes. An internal, soothing murmur told her she was a tree with eyes that would not open and ears that heard not the vibrations of anguish. The tingle was only sleep. A good sleep, vast and dark as the night.

Excerpt: "Hey, Moongirl? Where you going?" A young pilot from Ganymede asked, zeroing in on the young woman's ship inside the gap between Earth and the moon.

This month's question: What do you do to back up your work? What advice can you give regarding organization?
Answer below Editors love feedback!
Last month's question: What tips can you offer others for keeping your story simple?
Kåre เลียม Enga : Frosting may make a cake look pretty but if it doesn't taste good it doesn't matter. Talking about it is nice. A picture is better. But a piece in one's mouth and another sitting on the plate eager to be eaten is best.
Vomit 500 or 1000 words then rinse, wash and edit to 300. Get rid of the clutter. The right adjective is worth a hundred meaningless ones. 'Is' and 'the' tell me little and show me nothing. Evoke an emotion; any will do. If Hemingway can do it in 6 words you don't need 60 thousand.
jolanh : Get rid of unnecessary exposition. Explore the scene as the character moves. avoid flashbacks unless necessary.
LorenIsOneOfMyNames : Don't switch POV around unless it's necessary and be careful with describing physical traits over and over (for example eyes. My grey eyes shifted over to his blue ones. His beautiful blue eyes searched me for a minute, then he looked away. He raised his eyebrow at me, his blue eyes full of questions. I feel like I could swim in the depths of his eyes, which deeply resembled the ocean. It gets tedious to read. I find myself going "I get it, hie eyes are pretty. Cool, move on.")
Another thing is actions, like "I bit my lip" How often do you really bite your lip? Your character (as a general rule) shouldn't do something too much more than your average person does the same action.
Lynn Nichole : * Your characters do not have to save the world.
* Make sure every character introduced has their own fears, desires, and specific role to play.
* Draw from your own feelings and experiences. Don't have any? Go find them! :D
* Pick one theme or concept to tie it all together.
* Just write it, already. And give yourself time to mentally sort through any roadblocks. The rest will sort itself out.
woolwaulker: Edit fiercely. Edit visciously. Edit as an enemy would. Edit using every software trick you can find.
