Letter from the editor

Crash, Ooooh, Boom, Ahhhh

Soon we in America will once again be celebrating our Independence. I think the pandemic has made us antsy for this holiday, as for at least a month I've heard the occasional firework go off in the distance in my neighborhood.

Fireworks are my second favorite part of this holiday—right after the family part of this day. I adore the music that gives you goose bumps. The excitement that ripples through the crowds of people gathered together. The colors that burst across the sky—and all they represent.

I selected the cascade poetry form this month because it reminds me of fireworks. The pop of the first stanza spills over and falls down into the stanzas below it.

Cascade

The cascade form was invented by Udit Bhatia—and if my research is correct—he is a political theorist as well as a poet.

MUST HAVES

–-Your first stanza becomes part of the rest of the poem in the following format: The first line becomes the last line of the second stanza. The second line becomes the last line of the third stanza. The third line becomes the last line of the fourth stanza and so on depending on how many lines you choose for your first stanza.

COULD HAVES or WHAT IS THE POET’S CHOICE IN ALL THIS?

--Stanzas: The number of lines in your first stanza plus that first stanza. Example: If your first stanza is a couplet, then you will have a total of 3 stanzas. You get to choose how many stanzas based on how many lines you start with in your first stanza.

--Meter

--Rhyme

--Line count: See above

--Alignment

--Topic/theme

Love In My Korean Summer Home

In my Korean summer home
Where I often take time to roam
Walking in the forest near me

It stills fills me with such deep glee
Thinking about how I met my fate
