Taking a glance into the world of science fiction and current reality with some ponderings over space travel as concept of tourism.

Letter from the editor

Who would have thought space tourism could become a thing in our time? Sure, it's no rockets with sprockets like the Jetsons but it's interesting to consider the fact that space travel is on its way to becoming commercialized and provided to the general public (well, those willing to take the rest and pay the money). And yet it's here. With the recent flight from Virgin Galactic, there has been a shift in the way we may start to view space travel.

A couple resources on space travel today:
https://www.space.com/topics/space-tourism
https://www.virgingalactic.com

While it's not 100 percent surprising that a couple billionaires have taken on the challenge of getting to travel to, near or in space, there is still some uncertainty in the shift from the science focus of NASA to the journey exploration is taking today. Yet it is something that others have predicted over the years. Buzz Aldrin himself made a claim about space travel and how much he expected it to change over the years. "I believe that space travel will one day become as common as airline travel is today. I’m convinced, however, that the true future of space travel does not lie with government agencies — NASA is still obsessed with the idea that the primary purpose of the space program is science — but real progress will come from private companies competing to provide the ultimate adventure ride, and NASA will receive the trickle-down benefits."

While this is becoming our reality, it's also something that we can construct and create within our fiction. Space travel is not a foreign topic, in particular for those who write science fiction. Tv shows like Star Trek and even movies such as Lost in Space include different reasons for the characters having to travel in space and different eras of civilization with capacities that vary in relation to the how or why of traveling beyond Earth's atmosphere. Travel is one thing, though, tourism could be a complete different animal depending on how you develop or create the world. Who gets to travel in space? Why would a family pick that as their yearly vacation? What are the benefits and cost? Plus, who gets to make the merchandise and "been there" t-shirts for people to purchase in order to show off the places they've been on vacation? So many options for the places you'll go and the things you'll see when including a launch into space in the itinerary.
