Hello, everyone. I am ~ Santa Sisco ~ .. I'm your guest editor of this Noticing Newbies newsletter.
I aim to ensure you have a smooth transition into the site. I still remember my first day here. "Bitem?" Do I have to be a computer programmer to put my writing on here? Forty-eight hours later, I realized it was a case of easy when you know how!. My biggest mistake when I joined was that I didn't take the time to read the "Writing.Com 101" . I was excited and wanted to do everything on the same day. Sound familiar? |

Groups.
WDC has many groups, and I must admit there are too many to mention in a newsletter.
How do I join a group?
Groups will usually have information about the group, including how to join, on the group forum page or a forum run by the group. The criteria for joining vary, but it will usually involve nothing more complicated than having an interest in the group's subject matter. Some groups are “invitation only”, but they are rare. Groups run most non-official site contests and activities.
To set up your own group, you must have an upgraded membership; you can create and run a group with up to 250 members. Premium membership allows up to 1000 members to join your group, and a Premium Plus membership allows up to 2,500 members per group. There are various types of groups, and I will give a few examples of popular groups on WDC. (Please note there will be many groups I do not mention, but that does not mean they are not worthy of a mention – I can’t mention them all!)
Newbie groups:
| | Invalid Item This item number is not valid. #1949660 by Not Available. | The Newbies Academy is a group I founded. We help with site navigation and all things related to WDC. We also offer help with publishing and other writing-related issues or direct you to the best group/member to help you.
Angel groups:
These groups are dedicated to good deeds, kindness, and community spirit. A few examples are:
RAOK is a group that gives upgraded membership assistance to those who are struggling to maintain their membership.
The Angel Army is “Dedicated to promoting positivity, encouragement, and support to the WDC community.”
| | Invalid Item This item number is not valid. #1648068 by Not Available. | Sisco’s Good Deed Group does various acts of kindness for members and groups of WDC. (This group membership is by invitation only.)
"Paying It Forward" Paying it Forward is a private group that spreads joy via messages and kind gestures to members of WDC.
Ninja Monkeys is a private group that spreads joy via messages and kind gestures to members of WDC. (Sorry, I couldn’t find their secret group page.) **Edit - I found it. However, access is restricted. "Invalid Item"
The Secret Squirrels is a private group that spreads joy via messages and kind gestures to members of WDC.
Reviewing groups: (Note: Most reviewing groups offer gift points as rewards for reviews, and some offer merit badges for completing a set amount of reviews per month.)
The Super Power Reviewing group is a dedicated group that rewards reviewers who post reviews affiliated to the group.
Anniversary Reviews is a group that gifts reviews to members celebrating the account anniversaries on WDC. They also offer rewards for reviews done.
You can view the top twenty reviewing groups here: https://www.writing.com/main/my_feedback/action/top_actively_reviewing_groups
Writing groups:
The WDC Writers University is a group offering paid and free tuition courses in writing. See their group page for details of the courses offered.
The Poet’s Place is a group dedicated to all aspects of poetry. I can vouch for the exciting and informative newsletters they send out frequently.
| | Invalid Item This item number is not valid. #1617315 by Not Available. | The Sci-Fi Writers Guild is for “Collaborations, discussions and reviews” about anything Sci-Fi.
The 30 Day Bloggers Group is dedicated to members who frequently update their WDC blogs. “Among the best bloggers on WDC can be found here. Join us, and expand your readership.”
Miscellaneous groups:
The NaNoWriMo Write A Thon group is “A NaNoWriMo fundraiser... compete as a NaNo writer or donate by sponsoring one!”
The Veteran’s group is for “all veterans of all service.”
The Senior Center Group is “A group for us older folks who've been there, done that, (and our young friends, too!).”
Groups have an added advantage for newbies as it is a great way to get to know other people with similar interests. I would guess 99% of the people I consider good friends on here I met within a group forum.
