Each day is a chance to write a
Phenomenal story, poem, or chapter.

Letter from the editor

What is special about September? Writing.com will be 21 years old and the autumnal equinox will occur. Since I do not celebrate the autumnal equinox, writing.com's 21st birthday makes September special. When I was growing up, being 21 was considered inspiring and awesome. Because at 21 you could legally purchase alcohol and vote.

September is derived from the Roman word "septem" and means 7. It was the 7th month of the Roman calendar, and Vulcan, the god of fire, oversaw the month. This is the month Romans believed volcanic eruptions and fires occurred. I doubt that there was any more proof of this in Roman times, as there is today. However, if you have superstitious characters, this m might be one of their superstitions.

September's birth stone is the sapphire, which is a stone of truth, power, wisdom, and good fortune. The birth flowers are morning glories, symbolizing affection, and asters, symbolizing a powerful love. September's zodiac signs are Virgo and Libra. How would you use this information in a character profile or story plot?

The September full moon, occurring on the 20th, is the Harvest moon, which is also known as the Corn moon. In industrial societies the names of the moons are not that important. In agricultural societies, the names of the moon is a bit more important because of their relationship to the different weather events, animals, and crops. The Harvest moon is supposed to be romantic, I have not figured out why it should be more romantic than any other full moon.

What will you be celebrating in September? Could you use your celebration as part of a fantasy or science fiction story? Please let me know the answer to these questions. If you have any stories to submit to this newsletter, please submit them.
