Dear Reader,
This is crazy.
I'm actually going to base this newsletter on a TV commercial, of all things!
The TV commercial in question is that of WestJet.
One Christmas, WestJet decided to do 12,000 miracles around the world – a miracle for every employee. Thus, WestJetters went into grocery shops and restaurants, randomly paying for people's shopping or their lunch. They organized a trip to Hawaii for an army-man and his family. They organized a trip to Disneyland for a young widow and her children. Throughout, at the control center, there was a scoreboard of miracles performed. Nine thousand ... eleven thousand ... watch the commercial for the final number (no, WestJet isn't giving me a commission!) ! Number exceeded!
I enjoy watching this commercial. It's the heartwarming, human part of an otherwise commercial activity. It's nice to see real people doing real things for others and the genuine happiness that results.
But what keeps the drama is the NUMBERS. Where are we at? How many more to go? Have we reached the goal? WOW! We've exceeded it!
Numbers can take many forms.
Physical counting, of objects (or actions, as in the WestJet commercial);
Money;
Time – the need to complete a task by a deadline (as in MasterChef);
Time – the countdown, like when the curtain is about to go up at a rock concert;
Time – the wait. It's easier when it's known, harder to handle when it's unknown, usually;
Score in a sport;
Votes in an election;
The size of a crowd;
So many more
Another thing I watch on You Tube sometimes are the Surprise Squad snippets. These involve combinations of numbers. So many people doing so many tasks in so many (limited) days. Like renovating an adoptive family's entire house in a couple of days while the family is out skiing. Took a large team working together, to a precise plan and a lot of enthusiasm! All about numbers to meet the challenge.
So yeah, thinking drama? Think numbers!
One, two, three, go!
